Rachel and Ross' relationship began long before the first episode of Friends. She was apparently unprepared to begin dating, given that she recently left her fiancé Barry at the altar, so Ross decided to give her space, but soon after that she met Paolo and began a torrid affair that made Ross sink into rage and envy.
