Warning: Contains SPOILERS for FreeridgeThe inaugural season of Netflix’s Freeridge deals with multiple spiritual themes, but it's not immediately clear whether ghosts are actually real in the show’s universe. Serving as an original spinoff of another huge Netflix property, On My Block, Freeridge boasts a new cast of characters and adventures, all taking place in the titular town. The teen comedy-drama follows Gloria, Ines, Demi, and Cameron as they deal with the consequences of unleashing a curse from an old box, which, among other typical teen problems, turn their lives upside-down.

The strange box’s curse isn’t the only paranormal presence in Freeridge, however. Along with the box, the characters in On My Block’s spinoff show find themselves dealing with multiple ghosts throughout the season. However, while the curse feels very real to the Freeridge characters, it is not as easy to tell if the ghostly presence surrounding the box and the curse are as well.

Freeridge's First Ghost Isn't Real - But Its Second Might Be

freeridge ghosts

Answering whether ghosts are real in Netflix’s Freeridge is not exactly straightforward. Multiple ghosts are spotted in Freeridge, but some of them are more legitimate than others. Throughout Freeridge season 1, the kids in the titular town are followed by what they believe to be the ghost of Marisol, who wants the “cursed” box in their possession. However, the Freeridge characters eventually realize that Marisol’s “ghost” is actually her twin sister, Mariluna, who Gloria eventually forms a connection with. While Marisol’s “ghost” (who died in On My Block) can be explained away as Mariluna, not every ghost in the Netflix show can be accounted for.

The other ghost that appears in Freeridge could still be real, however. In episode 4, “Dead Mom”, Gloria visits her mother’s grave in the cemetery and vents about the difficult time she is having during season 1 of the Netflix show. Here, Gloria is visited by her mom’s ghost, who offers her comfort. Though the ghost of Gloria’s mom could be Gloria’s imagination, it is clear that Gloria believes the ghost is real, leaving it unclear whether the spiritual encounter truly happened in Freeridge.

Why Freeridge Doesn't Answer If Magic Is Real In The Show

Cameron Freeridge character

Though Freeridge deals with several plot points surrounding spirituality, specters, and even curses, the Netflix series doesn’t ever completely confirm if these otherworldly forces are fully real. The main characters, namely Glora, Ines, and Demi, clearly believe in them, especially the curse, which helps the audience buy into the existence of the magic as well. However, the girls of the On My Block spinoff seem to manifest the curse through their behavior rather than there being an actual higher power at work.

Freeridge doesn’t answer whether magic is real because ultimately, it doesn’t matter. The real source of many of the characters’ problems in the On My Block spinoff is their failure to communicate with each other properly. The curse only shines a light on these issues and allows the characters to get them out in the open and heal their problems with each other. Though the Netflix show Freeridge may choose to explore the existence (or lack thereof) of magic in the future, the real magic in Freeridge season 1 is the characters’ relationships with and love for each other.
