Free Guy has finally hit theaters after numerous delays and although it's an original IP, there's still plenty of references to famous films and video games. Free Guy is deeply rooted in video game culture and takes heavy inspiration from titles like Grand Theft Auto to tell its story, but likely due to licensing, it still uses a lot of generic weapons and vehicles during many of its action scenes. That said, the filmmakers behind the project did manage to secure some tools from several iconic games.

Although Free Guy's most obvious cameos will come in the way of references to popular films - particularly ones owned by Disney - there are still lots of subtle or easy-to-miss references to classic video games throughout. From the massively popular Fortnite to the long-dormant, yet still beloved Portal, there's a lot of nods to the world of gaming in the Ryan Reynolds film, with some even playing a role in the story.

On top of the numerous celebrity cameos - which Ryan Reynolds has said played a part in Free Guy's immediate success - there are a lot of hidden references aimed precisely at gamers. Here are all of the noteworthy video game weapon and vehicle cameos.

The Scorpion Tank From Halo

This is one of several "blink and you'll miss it" game-related cameos in Free Guy. With a new Halo game set to release in 2021, it's quite fitting to see the Scorpion tank make an appearance in the film. The UNSC tank can be seen toward the start as Guy is exploring Free City. Halo's Scorpion tank doesn't take up much screen time sadly, as it's largely just crushing cars in the background of some shots and gives viewers a sense of the game's chaotic battles.

The Portal Gun and Half-Life's Gravity Gun

J.J. Abrams hints at Portal video game movie

Weapons from two of Valve's most iconic franchises appear in Free Guy. The Portal Gun appears a couple of times, namely when Molotov Girl (Jodie Comer) and Guy teleport back to her hideout for the first time and again during the climax when Guy fights Dude. In that same climactic battle, Guy also uses the Gravity Gun from Half-Life to pick up Dude and drag him through the roof of a small structure near the beach of Free City. This high-profile inclusion of the Portal Gun is another fun Free Guy cameo but it still likely won't convince Valve to make Portal 3.

Mega Man's Mega Buster

During the fight in the penthouse owned by Channing Tatum's character, Guy rides in on a motorcycle to show how much he has leveled up. He uses a variety of weapons, including a steering wheel, but also quickly spawns Mega Man's famous arm canon, the Mega Buster. It's incredibly brief, but it's definitely a fun nod to one of Capcom's most beloved characters and shows just how sentient Guy has become in the film.

Fortnite's Llama Pickaxe

Given that Fortnite added a Free Guy skin, it should come as little surprise the game makes an appearance in the film. On top of someone flossing and the appearance of Twitch's Ninja, the Llama from Fortnite also makes a cameo in the form of a pickaxe during the climactic fight. It may be easy to miss since this sequence features the likes of Captain America's shield, a lightsaber, or Hulk hands.
