A funny new video promoting Free Guy sees Ryan Reynolds act as if he believed the film was based upon a true story. Director Shawn Levy’s sci-fi comedy written by Zak Penn (Ready Player One) and Matt Lieberman (The Christmas Chronicles) is a contemporary take on the idea that life may or may not be a simulation. Its story follows Guy, a bank teller who discovers he’s an NPC living in a Fortnite-esque video game entitled Free City. When Free City’s publisher decides to shut it down, Guy teams up with the coder who conceived him to save the game.

On top of the film’s plethora of cameos—from real-world streamers to a Marvel actor—its ensemble roster includes Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Joe Keery (Stranger Things), Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), and Taika Waititi. Free Guy is one of the first films to continue production at 20th Century Studios following the Disney-Fox merger after seeing multiple delays due to COVID-19. Its marketing campaign has leaned into Reynolds’ irreverence, releasing clips like a Korg/Deadpool reaction video and a featurette showcasing a very large secondary character played by Reynolds.

With the film now available in theaters, Reynolds shared a new clip concerning Free Guy. The video sees Shawn Levy, Joe Keery, and Lil Rel Howery discussing their characters with Reynolds pretending he thought/thinks Free Guy is a true story. He says he even allowed the "real-life" Guy to live with him in preparation for the role. Check out the hilarious clip below:

Reynolds is both a star and producer of Free Guy and its marketing campaign is led in part by his company, Maximum Effort Marketing, of which he is the chief creative officer. As was the case with the Deadpool franchise, Detective Pikachu, and Aviation Gin, Free Guy’s marketing has Reynolds’ humor written all over it. In addition to Reynolds becoming cartoonishly muscular and Deadpool officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor also pitched Disney a short film that would play in front of Free Guy. Unfortunately, the Mouse House was against Wade Wilson’s adoration for the hunter who killed Bambi’s mom.

Early reactions to Free Guy have hailed the film as the surprise hit of the summer. It’s already certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and looks to be one of Reynolds' best-reviewed films. It may not be based on a true story but it certainly has fun with a potentially melodramatic concept—which is what Reynolds does best. Thankfully, Free Guy doesn’t make Guy the Chosen One...because The Matrix is based on a true story, right?
