The first poster for the video game-inspired action-comedy Free Guy has been released, alongside a tongue-in-cheek video with the film's core cast. The film was announced last year, with Ryan Reynolds signed on as the film's lead. Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Taika Waititi had also joined the project. Written by Matt Lieberman and directed by Shawn Levy, the film will also star Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, and Channing Tatum. Reynolds also served as a producer.

Free Guy revolves around a lonely bank teller named Guy (Reynolds), who discovers that he is actually an NPC (non-playable character) in a violent open-world video game called 'Free City'. With his bank consistently robbed, Guy exists solely in the background until it becomes clear that the game will soon go permanently offline. Keery is slated to play a character named Keys. Comer, meanwhile, plays Millie (aka. Molotov Girl). The rest of the cast is rounded out by Lil Rel Howery as Buddy and Utkarsh Ambudkar as Mouser. Tatum's character - and whether it's a cameo or something more - remains firmly under wraps. Equally, Waititi's character has yet to be named, though word is that he will play the owner of the company that created the game and serve as the primary antagonist.

The cast and crew made an appearance at this year's New York Comic-Con, where they host a brief panel alongside one for the upcoming prequel, The King's Man. The Free Guy panel offered an exclusive first look at the trailer, which received glowing praise for those in attendance. In its wake, Fox officially released the first official poster for the film. Declaring that "when the world needed a hero, they got Guy" alongside an image of Reynolds' pulling open his suit in a superhero fashion to reveal...the exact suit and name-tag beneath it. They also released a video introducing fans to the four core cast members. As well as briefly discussing the film, both Reynolds and Waititi hilariously disavow 2011's Green Lantern film. Both claim to be meeting each other for the first time, despite Reynolds having played the lead, Hal Jordan, and Waititi portraying Thomas Kalmaku. Check out both pieces below:

The cast featured in the video needs no actual introduction. Thanks to such hits as Deadpool and Detective Pikachu, Reynolds is riding a career-high right now. He will also next be seen in Netflix's 6 Underground - which recently unveiled its own first official trailerWaititi, equally, is garnering much acclaim on and off camera, having most recently directed and delivered a scene-stealing performance in Thor: Ragnarok.  He will follow that up directly with Thor: Love and Thunder and his own separate project, Jojo Rabbit, which he not only directs but stars in as an imaginary version of Hitler. Keery, as stated in the video, is one of the stars of the smash-hit series, Stranger Things. Comer, meanwhile, recently nabbed an Emmy for her breakout turn as Villanelle in Killing Eve.

This isn't the first time Reynolds has promoted his movies in uniquely interesting ways. Nor is it the first time he's openly mocked himself for that particular project. In Deadpool 2, he even traveled through time to kill a fictional version of himself before he could agree to work on the ill-fated film. Such humor will no doubt lend itself well to the film, which looks more and more to be very much akin to such other similarly-themed, self-referential hits. As such, Free Guy will no doubt be one people will be on the lookout for in the new year.
