Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare introduced John Doe as the last surviving teenager of Springwood, but who is he really and could he have been "Dream Master" Alice's son? Freddy Krueger seemed to get more popular with each passing year following his 1984 debut but by the time A Nightmare On Elm Street: The Dream Child arrived in 1989, the wheels had come off the series. Freddy had become a loveable prankster due to the franchise's overexposure and its move to make him more of a leading character than a terrifying villain.

The lower-than-expected grosses of the fifth entry The Dream Child convinced New Line the time was right to end the series. This led to 1991's Freddy's Dead: The Nightmare, where a counselor named Maggie (Liza Zane) helps amnesia-struck teen John Doe (Shon Greenblatt) rediscover his past and connection to Freddy. This "final" entry turned Freddy into a full-on cartoon character, with the film's ending with a poorly executed 3D finale. The sequel is considered one of the weakest of the original series, and a disappointing end to Freddy's original run.

One of the few intriguing elements about Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare is the character of John Doe, as it sets up a mystery it never resolves. John heads back to Springwood following his dramatic opening escape and he becomes convinced he's Krueger's child. This turns out to not be the case, with Freddy killing Doe after revealing he was allowed to escape only so he could lure Freddy's daughter Maggie back to him. The movie offers no hints about Doe's real identity, other than him being the last remaining teenager in Springwood.

Is John Doe Alice's Son In Freddy's Dead?

In early drafts of Freddy's Dead, Jacob Johnson, the son of A Nightmare On Elm Street's 4 and 5's "Dream Master" Alice (Lisa Wilcox), was the lead. Alice would be killed in that draft's opening but Jacob would inherit her power. When Spencer is being attacked by Freddy during the movie's (in)famous video game nightmare scene, John knows he can enter Spencer's dream by getting knocked out. Both Alice - and Kristen before her - could enter other people's dreams, so the fact John knew to do this could hint he was Jacob.

Jacob being the last teen survivor of Springwood would also make a certain amount of sense if he was Alice Johnson's son, seeing how she managed to beat Freddy twice. That said, Tracy is ALSO able to enter Spencer's dream through meditation, suggesting John doesn't necessarily have Alice's powers. Director Rachel Talalay wasn't a fan of the early, Jacob draft and it was decided to make direct links to past entries more ambiguous so the story had something of a clean slate. Ultimately, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare doesn't give enough information about John Doe's background to make a solid guess, but Jacob Johnson is as good a guess as any.
