More sequels are being released now than ever before, including ones that audiences never even considered, such as the Dirty Dancing follow-up slated for release in 2024 (via Variety). While a Dirty Dancing sequel might sound absurd, especially considering that Patrick Swayze is irreplaceable as Johnny Castle, it's far from the first classic movie that's gotten a pointless sequel.

Redditors have jumped at the chance to debate which franchises were milked the most by studios and have gotten the most pointless sequels. Between a sequel to a classic golf comedy, a CGI-drenched legacy sequel, and two too many Taken movies, the franchises should have quit while they were ahead.

Caddyshack

ATS200 thinks Caddyshack 2 ruined what is a perfect movie. The Redditor hilarious notes, "Best golf movie ever made: Caddyshack. Worst golf movie ever made: Caddyshack 2." Caddyshack is undisputedly the best golf movie ever made, and while that isn't saying much given that there aren't many golf-based movies and the ones that exist aren't all that compelling, it's an accolade that the 1980 movie truly deserves.

Caddyshack 2 sees none of the original cast fully reprising their roles, as Chevy Chase's appearance is a glorified cameo and Bill Murray is nowhere to be found. It's a sequel in name only, and that's likely what Warner Bros. was banking on. But it didn't work out, as the sequel failed to even make back its budget at the box office.

Indiana Jones

Indiana and Marion sinking in quicksand in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Indian Jones is one of the most iconic movie characters of all time, and the first three films in the series were in the debate for the greatest trilogy of all time. At least they were until the fourquel, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released 19 years after The Last Crusade.

Environmental_Win102 notes, "Should’ve finished with The Last Crusade. They ride off into the sunset FFS." There's no more perfect ending than Indy and his father riding into the sunset in Hatay. And while there are ways Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is underrated, such as Indy's detective work and the return of Marion, it wasn't enough to save the CGI fest from tarnishing the series' legacy.

Legally Blonde

Elle Woods in an all-pink outfit smiling in Legally Blonde 2

Legally Blonde was one-of-a-kind, as it mixed courtroom drama and romantic comedy, and the result was surprisingly clever. Even critics of romcoms couldn't resist the compelling procedural law elements of the movie. However, its sequel didn't quite reach the heights of the original, and CorgiMonsoon posits, "Legally Blonde was a surprise hit comedy. Legally Blonde 2 was a pandering rehash with no new ideas."

And while even the movie's biggest fans might not know, there was a direct-to-DVD spin-off, Legally Blondes, too. With the original being one of the most popular feel-good chick flicks, the upcoming Legally Blonde threequel, as reported by Screen Rant, will hopefully balance the scales and be a return to form for the series.

Jurassic Park

Alan scolds Billy in Jurassic Park III

DrawinTron thinks the Jurassic Park sequels and Jurassic World movies have ruined the original 1993 Mezasoic movie. The Redditor argues, "None of the sequels understand that point of the first movie. They all just saw how much people loved the dinosaurs and focused on that one aspect while everything else suffered."

Though the Redditor makes a great point, regardless of how the user and others feel about them, the movies are huge hits, especially Jurassic World, which made an astounding $1.5 billion worldwide. And with the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion seeing the return of Alan Grant and Ian Malcolm, it could make even more and possibly even win over some Jurassic World naysayers.

Donnie Darko

Samantha looks angry in S. Darko

2001's Donnie Darko follows an angsty teenager who learns that he has supernatural powers and the ability to time travel, and it's one of the most beloved indie hits of the 21st century. But 47-Rambaldi notes that it was ruined by its sequel, S. Darko, which followed eight years later. The original writer-director, Richard Kelly, had nothing to do with the sequel and it was made against his will, which might explain the direct-to-DVD's quality.

But Kelly is a one-hit-wonder director, as all of his movies after Donnie Darko have been critical and commercial failures, so it's unlikely that a sequel under his direction would have been any good either. However, fans will find out, as Kelly told Rolling Stone that he's developing his own sequel to the 2001 cult classic.

Taken

Liam Neeson as Bryan Mills on the phone and pointing a gun in Taken 3

The Liam Neeson-starring Taken massively overperformed at the box office, making 10 times its budget, but that only meant that the studio planned to milk it for all it was worth. Cptnamr7 hilariously posits, "Taken 3 makes Taken 2 look like Taken 1," referring to the fact that Taken 2 was hated by critics and fans, but it looks like Citizen Kane compared to Taken 3.

What started out as a gritty, violent, and impressively shot R-rated action movie had become a lifeless PG-13 four-quadrant series by the third film. The Taken franchise lives on through other sub-par action movies too. So many studios were influenced by Taken's shock success and wanted a Liam Neeson revenge movie of their own, which has led to movies like The Commuter and Non-Stop.

Star Wars

Big80sweens believes that the original Star Wars trilogy has been ruined by sequels, and while they could be accusing any of the eight following movies, they take aim at Disney's releases. The Redditor notes, "Most people hated the Star Wars prequel trilogy… then the sequel trilogy came out." In hindsight, more and more fans are starting to look fondly at the prequel trilogy, but that might be for nostalgic reasons, not to mention that the sequel trilogy makes them look great.

However, as polarizing as episodes VII-IX and Solo: A Star Wars Story are, Rogue One is arguably one of the finest sci-fi movies of the past 10 years and the whole final hour is literally a war in space. Disney has also done a great job with its Star Wars Disney+ series, with Obi-Wan Kenobi shaping up to be the most exciting Star Wars-related content in decades.

Jay And Silent Bob

Jay and Silent Bob look shocked in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot

Kevin Smith created a cinematic universe way before the MCU, as though there are only two movies in the Jay and Silent Bob stoner comedy series, they have appeared in almost all of the director's movies, tieing them all together. That might add to the reason why MONKEH-NUTZ feels like Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back has been ruined.

2019's Jay and Silent Bob Reboot felt more like a vanity project of Smith's than anything, as it was too self-referential and too full of easter eggs and cameos. It's looking like the upcoming Clerks III will follow the same formula too, and it will, of course, feature Jay and Silent Bob.

Toy Story

Woody and Bo Peep as lost toys in Toy Story 4.

Toy Story 3 had the perfect ending, as it saw Andy grow up and move to college almost at the exact time as kids who saw the first movie in theatres were moving to college. But nine years later, Toy Story 4 arrived, and before its release, many fans argued that it wasn't necessary even though they'd get to see these beloved characters one more time. Butterbeanacp is one of those fans, arguing, "4 just ruined it and beat a dead horse."

However, despite being unnecessary, the fourquel was universally acclaimed, just as emotional as always, and it introduced some fun new characters. The movie didn't need to happen, but it's certainly enjoyable at the very least, and the Redditor is very much in the minority.

Fast & Furious

Vin Diesel as Dom working on a car in F9

It seems like most Fast & Furious fans are split into two different groups. There are the ones who prefer the high-octane blockbuster movies, and the ones who prefer the more crime and street racing-oriented first three movies. Vaivaim8 fits into the latter group, as they think the outrageous set pieces of the new movies have ruined the originals.

The Redditor posits, "The Toretto crew were highway robbers that stole DVDs. Not some super spies driving gravity-defying cars." It's hard to believe that the original movie and F9 are even part of the same franchise, and even suspending disbelief for the fourth movie is a stretch.
