The director of Eternals, Chloe Zhao, thinks that Frances McDormand is ready to enter the MCU. The highly-anticipated 26th feature in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to debut on November 5th in theaters worldwide following numerous delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The story takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame following the defeat of Thanos and focuses on the Eternals, an immortal alien race created by the Celestials who have secretly lived on Earth for over 7,000 years. After centuries of remaining in hiding and living among the humans, the Eternals are forced to emerge from the shadows to take on their evil counterparts known as the Deviants.

Eternals is the 4th film in the MCU Phase 4 roster and features an ensemble cast led by Game of Thrones alumni, Richard Madden and Kit Harington, and also includes Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Gemm Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, and Barry Keoghan, to mention a few. This will also be Zhao's first film since her Academy Award-winning effort for Nomadland which starred Frances McDormand, who also won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the critically-acclaimed Western drama.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment correspondent Kevin Polowy, Zhao was asked whether McDormand would be convinced to join the MCU sometime in the future. She responded by saying that in her mind, the veteran actress would be "open" to the idea as she may be looking "to do something really fun and unexpected." Her quote can be read below:

"I think-I think she wants to. I think she's open to it. I think she wants to do something really fun. I think she will want to do something unexpected, 'cause that's Fran, she's always challenging herself."

Frances McDormand and Chloe Zhao making Nomadland

When Zhao was questioned further about whether she spoke to McDormand about the subject, all she had to say was "No comment," which could indicate that there is a possibility that a discussion may have taken place between the two. If that were actually the case, then the most likely avenue into the MCU for the Fargo actress would be a potential sequel to Eternals. Zhao recently expressed that she would jump at the chance to direct a follow-up to her entry into the MCU as she loved working with the creative team at Marvel and if she were to be reunited with her Nomadland collaborator, she would undoubtedly make sure that it's a seamless transition for her into blockbuster territory.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has built a reputation for making unconventional casting choices over the years that have turned out to be a stroke of genius. Those choices have come in the form of some of the biggest Oscar-winning actors working in Hollywood today to play some unique roles, including the likes of Cate Blanchett, Michael Douglas, Anthony Hopkins, and many more with Angelina Jolie also set to be added to the star-studded list following the release of Eternals next month. However, if the Marvel team were to go ahead and bring Frances McDormand on board for one of their future projects, and if Zhao's comments do come to fruition, McDormand would undeniably be a welcome addition to the MCU.
