The Foundation season 2 trailer teases that the new season will continue the sci-fi series' epic scale. The series, which launched on Apple TV+ in 2021, was created by Man of Steel screenwriter David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman and is executive produced by Robyn Asimov. The series, which is loosely based on the short stories by her father Isaac Asimov, follows a group of rebels attempting to bring down an intergalatic empire, with an ensemble cast that includes Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey, Laura Birn, Terrence Mann, and Cassian Bilton.

Today, Apple TV shared the official trailer for the upcoming Foundation season 2. Clips from the new season (including several breathtaking vistas of otherworldly grandeur) are intercut with a dramatic reentry into the atmosphere in a one-person pod, highlighting the human element of this larger-than-life story. The trailer's voiceover narration teases the fact that although the long journey of season 1 was harrowing, "the mission had just begun." Check out the trailer below:

What To Expect From Foundation Season 2

Foundation Season 2

Although the AppleTV+ show is only loosely based on the Asimov stories, they can still provide something of a blueprint for what to expect in Foundation season 2. Most likely drawing from the 1942 short story "The Mayors," which follows Salvor Hardin (the character played by Harvey, which is very different from the original portrayal) after becoming Mayor of Terminus. As the trailer for Foundation season 2 teases, "the second crisis begins," likely referring to a brand-new attack on the Foundation mounted by Anacreon while internal factions on Terminus argue for its militarization in order for them to defend themselves.

So far, every main cast member has been confirmed to return in Foundation season 2, with the possible exception of Chipo Chung as the voice of the Deliverance operating system. The cast will also be receiving an influx of ten new characters played by performers including Bend It Like Beckham's Kulvinder Ghir, The Wheel of Time's Sandra Yi Sencindiver, Sweetheart's Ella-Rae Smith, Doctor Who's Dimitri Leonidas, The Crown's Ben Daniels, Mindhunter's Holt McCallany, Thor: Ragnarok's Rachel House, and Homeland's Nimrat Kaur. Also joining the cast are Harry Potter alums Alfred Enoch and Isabella Laughland.

Although Foundation season 2 promises an epic sci-fi story tracking another chapter in the fall of the Empire, it will only tell one chunk of the overarching speculative historical narrative. Goyer has already revealed that, if all goes well, he intends the series to run for eight seasons, which means that by the close of season 2, only one-quarter of the full story will have been told. While it's a tall order to imagine that the series will be able to run for that long, it was renewed for season 2 only 3 episodes into the 10-episode season 1, which could imply that the viewership numbers for the Isaac Asimov adaptation are quite strong, and they expect them to remain so.
