Perhaps the most ambitious addition to FX’s 2019 lineup, Fosse/Verdon gets a full trailer that also makes it the year’s first must-see show. The limited series features award-winning actors Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams in the roles of legendary choreographer and director Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, one of the most celebrated Broadway dancers in history. That combination alone should be enough to get even the most casual of television viewers to tune in, but it makes for a particularly potent combination for those who’ve long admired the work of Fosse and Verdon.

The show’s status as a limited series no doubt helped land such well-known actors, but it also demonstrates just how ambitious FX has become in creating high-end series that work either as one-and-done offerings or as part of an anthological format. It’s also perhaps the most anticipated new series from he cable network since Ryan Murphy took his many projects over to Netflix in a lucrative new deal. If anything, the parting of ways between the two will be good for them both, as Murphy prepares for new projects on the streaming giant, and FX gets to see others, like former The Americans producer and writer Joel Fields flex their creative muscle in entertaining new ways.

Though there’s been a teaser out on the internet for a few weeks now, the full trailer offers a better picture of the eight-episode series’ scope, one that follow Fosse and Verdon through decades of a passionate and ultimately rocky romantic relationship, as well as their creative collaborations that have stood the test of time. Check out the trailer and a synopsis below:

“Spanning five decades, Fosse/Verdon explores the singular romantic and creative partnership between Bob Fosse (Sam Rockwell) and Gwen Verdon (Michelle Williams). He is a visionary filmmaker and one of the theater’s most influential choreographers and directors. She is the greatest Broadway dancer of all time. Only Bob can create the groundbreaking musicals that allow Gwen to showcase her greatness. Only Gwen can realize the unique vision in Bob’s head. Together, they will change the face of American entertainment – at a perilous cost.”

From the look of things, both Rockwell and Williams should probably clear some shelf space for some future Emmy awards, and with a stellar supporting cast that includes Norbert Leo Butz (Bloodline), Aya Cash (You’re The Worst), Evan Handler (Californication), and Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers), the series might be looking at a few other award contenders.
