After what seems like an eternity of waiting and teasing, it looks like that cataclysmic comet is finally about to hit Fortnite.

Teased last month, fans of the battle royale game looked to the skies and spotted a comet hurtling towards Fortnite. Since then, there has been much to talk about, but as everyone cowers from some sort of Independence Day-style attack or a Deep Impact-level catastrophe, Epic Games has been holding out on its players... until now.

Following on from Fortnite's 3.6 update, fans on Reddit have noticed that a series of mysterious UFO shapes have appeared in the sky next to the comet. Heading to the top of Tilted Towers, developers have continued trolling players by adding a handy telescope pointing right at the comet. On top of all that, Epic Games has taken the viral marketing tact, posting a strange emergency broadcast to Fortnite's social media accounts that features a llama of all things (see below).

More than this, the llama broadcast has also popped up in-game making a static/alarm sound when approached. Interestingly, the broadcast includes five squares with an arrow pointing to them. Some are already speculating that if the arrow starts to move, it represents a countdown to the season's end on April 30th. With comets, UFOs and alien llamas, consider everyone suitably spooked.

What the finale means is just as mysterious as the comet currently occupying the stratosphere, but fans are expecting some sort of mass catastrophe to wipe out Tilted Towers and possible level up the location. For the moment, conspiracy theories are doing the rounds that include everything from a post-apocalyptic setting to an alien invasion and even dinosaurs. If the event countdown is to be believed, every day between now and April 30th might include another cryptic clue of what's to come.

Considering that Fortnite doesn't have an actual storyline or any characters for gamers to relate to (other than their own bloodthirsty avatar), the end of season event is a clever way to keep existing players on board for season 4 and to bring in fresh blood thanks to a clever marketing campaign. Pushing ahead of it's biggest rival, Fornite is showing itself to be more inventive than PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and a simple balancing of its weapon system. Whatever is coming, prepare for an imminent disaster and for Fortnite to grab headlines all over again.
