Fortnite will be releasing a new update for the popular battle royale game that will see it introduce a button that allows players to undo a purchase. Previously, developer Epic Games had stated that it planned to introduce a refund token system to help alleviate some of the buyer's remorse its players were feeling, but the undo button appears to be a major upgrade to that feature.
Fortnite remains one of the most lucrative properties in the gaming world, attracting millions of daily players and remaining the home of some of the most popular streamers on Twitch. Although recent competition from Apex Legends has seen the IP's grip on the battle royale genre loosen somewhat, swift action from Epic, including the introduction of features ripped from Apex Legends' best elements, has helped alleviate some of the pressure. If nothing else, the new tension between properties in the genre has seemed to inspire Epic to begin releasing quality-of-life updates at a quick clip.
The undo button update will implement a feature that fans have been clamoring for, although it will come with a reasonable caveat. The undo button will allow players to undo a purchase as long as they press it within a five-minute time window or before they begin another match, whichever comes first. These additional rules are probably in place to avoid any abuse of the feature, and don't sound as though they'll negatively impact player experience at the feature's launch. In a Reddit thread, an Epic engineering developer expanded on why the company feels the need to introduce the button:
"We neither want to add friction for players nor do we want to benefit from accidental purchases or players regretting a purchase...as an ongoing iteration, we are going to introduce an 'undo' button to the store page that allows you to easily refund without using up a token within a 5-minute time window, assuming you haven't started a match since purchase."
There's currently no release date for the undo button option, but at least players know it's in the works. As a game that relies primarily on microtransactions, Fortnite's purchase button is certainly one of its most important. Given how many stories have circulated about accidental online purchases in games that use a microtransaction model, it's a refreshing take to see Epic Games work hard to prevent these events from occurring with any frequency.
In fact, having an undo button might actually work out better for Fortnite and Epic Games. Having the ability to cancel a purchase within five minutes might tempt those of us with little impulse control to buy something knowing there's still an out, forget about it for the next five minutes, and then be stuck with it. At the very least, Epic is trying to save us from ourselves.
