Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is one of the most all-inclusive crossover games in history, but Epic Games has recently been working to dethrone the fighting game. Fortnite has introduced a flurry of crossover skins from popular entertainment franchises and even lets users play as virtual versions of famous streamers and athletes, like Brazilian soccer player Neymar Jr. in Fortnite's Chapter 2 Season 6. Even with these many new characters, has Fortnite overtaken Smash Bros. in having the most crossover characters?

Before tallying everyone up, it's important to understand the differences between the types of crossovers in both games. Smash Ultimate is a crossover game, at its core, and features a mind-boggling amount of franchises across its playable roster and in-game items. Many of these are also from franchises already owned by Smash's creator, Nintendo. Fortnite, on the other hand, is a battle royale that has relatively recently begun partnering with outside franchises to introduce popular characters as wearable skins.

All in all, Smash Ultimate includes far more franchise crossovers than Fortnite. But, for a fair comparison, this list will only include characters available as playable fighters, not Mii Fighter costumes (Cuphead, Travis Touchdown, Geno, etc.), Assist Trophies, or Spirits. It will also exclude any Fortnite skins that are only outfits and not full character models. For example, the Fortnite Ghostbusters skins represent a crossover franchise, but not a specific character from the films.

Fortnite Crossover Characters

Fortnite has 70 crossover skins, ranging from movie and TV characters to popular musicians like Travis Scott, to commemorate the hip-hop artists' wildly successful Fortnite concert. Epic Games' battle royale has kept an open mind when it comes to deciding what franchises it adds to the mix, so don't be surprised if even more out-of-left-field skins arrive in the future.

Smash Ultimate Crossover Characters

Sephiroth in Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has 87 crossover characters, though that tally counts fighters like Pyra and Mythra and Pokémon Trainer as separate representatives, since Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard are each completely different characters. Nintendo has plans to add two more DLC characters with Fighters Pass 2 by the end of 2021, so that number will soon be 89.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate still holds the crossover crown, for now. Nintendo adds playable characters at a much slower rate than Epic adds crossover skins to Fortnite, however, so that might not be the case for much longer.
