The PlayStation Store recently updated to reveal the Season 3 icon for Fortnite: Battle Royale, indicating that the next season might introduce a Spongebob Squarepants crossover thanks to something that resembles Bikini Bottom. This is not the first time the Fortnite store page has been updated prematurely to reveal content for the next season of Fortnite.
Epic Games has done a decent job keeping their plans for Fortnite Season 3 under wraps with the occasional map update and data miners revealing clues as to what the next season has in store. And the consensus so far is that the map will be flooded, and the majority of Fortnite's gameplay will take place underwater. This has been backed by leaked swimming mechanic updates, and now it has basically been confirmed by the leaked Fortnite Season 3 icon.
However, the icon not only leaks that the map will be flooded, but it also leaks a potential crossover. Fortnite has become known for its crossovers, and in recent seasons Epic Games has ramped up their cross promotions having at least two crossovers for each season. This past season, players saw the season-long crossover with Deadpool, leading up to the release of an entire set of X-Force skins. And additionally, there was a huge Travis Scott cross-promotion that even had its own in-game concert series. Epic has included crossovers from the likes of Batman, to Star Wars, to Drake, and has stated time and time again that their goal is to unite all media and make Fortnite the metaverse for pop-culture.
What better way to introduce the Spongebob Squarepants franchise into Fortnite than during a season that takes place "under the sea." This speculation stems from the new Season 3 icon prominently displaying a small island with three palm trees peeking above the water. This island bears an uncanny resemblance to the iconic Spongebob island that appears at the begging of every episode of the TV show and is visited by Spongebob and friends on multiple occasions during the series. The photo above shows the island on the leaked icon compared to the island that appears in the TV show.
While we are still unsure what Fortnite Season 3 will have in store, this new leak could be teasing a rather surprising crossover. While previous crossovers have stuck to more human characters, Spongebob would not feel too out of place in the world of Fortnite. This could serve as a cross-promotion for Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated which will be released later in June. Or maybe it was just a coincidence and players will see a more likely crossover that includes Aquaman. Regardless, the wait is nearly over for Season 3 as it is set to launch on June 11 following The Device event set to take place on June 4.
