Fortnite Players Uncover Mysterious Door That Won't Open

Fortnite's latest mystery revolves around a rather suspicious door that was uncovered after a full day of digging by players on the game's map. Fortnite has several excavation sites littered across the map that players must work together to get through, with rocks that feature millions of HP and require server-wide efforts that unite players in their goal of discovering some of the game's mysteries.

Fortnite has been having a rocky few months ever since the release of Apex Legends threatened its position at the top of the battle royale food chain. While it hasn't been usurped just yet, there are a number of other issues cropping up at an inopportune time, and many of them are self-inflicted: Fortnite pros can't practice despite there being a multi-million dollar tournament series for the title in 2019, and pros were also robbed of their ability to use stretched screen resolutions just days before the World Cup qualifiers began in earnest. That's on top of some negative publicity from mainstream media, with the game becoming a frequent target of those who want to suggest video games are unproductive distractions for youth.

Those outside concerns haven't been as noticeable within the game itself, though, which has at the very least managed to maintain the quality players have expected over its short existence. That continued today when players finally unearthed the third excavation site on Fortnite's map, unveiling mysterious steel doors that won't currently open. The reveal has created a lot of speculation about whether this is the harbinger of another major update like we've seen in the past or a more minor addition to come in the next few weeks but, as of right now, there's really no way of telling exactly what's happening.

Epic Games leaked the existence of the Ruin skin recently, a move that prompted players to question why the company embraced revealing the Week 8 Battle Pass outfit ahead of schedule. Given that this metal door appears to be a reasonably big find for Fortnite fans, it's highly likely the two are related, with the Ruin skin tying in to a greater event that's scheduled to happen in the near future. If that's the case, those metal doors seem awfully likely to house the kind of secret Fortnite's seasons tend to host over the course of their cycles.

It's a pretty big find for Fortnite fans, and a return to the elements of the title that have been so popular over the course of its existence. While the glare of the spotlight on its esports programs has been a little too hot for Fortnite to handle over the last few months, the game's content itself has remained relevant. Returning people's focus to that rather than Fortnite pros embracing Uno as a competitive replacement to Epic's title is probably a smart decision from the developer.
