The developer of FortniteEpic Games, seems to be cracking down on the wager matches that have become popular among the game’s top players. Wagers are one of the ways pro Fortnite players keep themselves competitive in between official tournaments. It also provides a fun and friendly way for them to engage with each other as well as their fans. While some of these wagers only involve a small amount of money, some might be worth a significant amount of cash.

Casual Fortnite players, in general, have been busy with Chapter 2 Season 6 of the popular battle royale game, which launched March 16 with an impressive cinematic that featured all the crossover characters from Season 5. The new Fortnite season introduced a slew of new content including a redesigned map, a new battle pass, new NPCs, and several new crossover skins. So far, the game has revealed skins for Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft, Raven from DC’s Teen Titans, and Brazilian soccer star Neymar Jr.

This new crackdown on wagers was revealed by Fortnite pro Clix from NRG Esports who recently shared that they’ll be staying away from wagers after they received a direct warning from developer Epic Games. Clix was personally contacted by Epic and was told to stop any involvement in wagers or risk receiving a ban, according to the tweet. Clix shared the warning so other pros will be aware and recommends that others stop being involved in wagers as well, lest they risk a ban as well. So far, Epic has yet to give an official statement on the matter but now that it’s become known, one may be released soon.

Epic’s move to become stricter with wagers may be due to the fact that a large number of pro Fortnite competitors are under the legal gambling age and given that wagers may be considered a form of gambling, it would be a breach of the company’s terms of service. Additionally, a large portion of the Fortnite player base are also underage, so even amateur or casual players that become involved in these wagers would also be breaching the same restrictions.

Even if this move from the developer leads to backlash from the pro or wider Fortnite community, Epic’s hands may be tied regardless as they may be wanting to avoid any issues as they may be accused of facilitating underage gambling. Professional Fortnite players will now have to find new ways to scratch their competitive itch while keeping themselves and their fans entertained.
