For the last few weeks, Fortnite players have been able to earn extra XP for their Season 4 Battle Pass by seeking out an evil gnome and thwarting his evil scheme. Every season of Fortnite gets a special theme, and many of the events, challenges, and cosmetics follow this particular plot and story. However, since Season 2, smaller side stories have taken place in the background of the season's main events. Back in Chapter 2 Season 2, players were first introduced to the gnomes in the conflict between the gnomes and the teddy bears. Then, in chapter three, players helped the astronaut in their Ancient Ship and helped the Coral Buddies evolve into the space age and beyond. This season, players have stumbled across the gnomes again and one gnome, in particular, has been trying his best to become a supervillain and harm other innocent garden statues.

So far, as the story goes, players found gnomes staring at a fancy advertisement for the Event of the Year, a vague event that appeared to have something to do with Super Slurp Juice. Then, players had to find and disarm dynamite traps meant to harm gnomes that were drawn to the Slurp Juice tanks. At the same time, players could stumble across the lair of an evil gnome and see its plans to taint Slurp Juice and use it against other gnomes. Players then needed to find a Most Wanted splash hidden on the map. Just a few weeks ago, players found the evil gnome at Slurpy Swamp in the Slurp Juice Factory and cleansed the tanks of toxic Slurp Juice, causing the gnome to try to escape. He didn't get far before crash landing. This week, players can earn 20,000 XP for finding the remains of the evil gnome and paying their respects. Here's how to find and complete the secret Grave Mistake challenge in Fortnite Season 4.

How to Complete The Secret Grave Mistake Challenge in Fortnite Season 4

A player pays respects at the gnome's grave in Slurpy Swamp in Fortnite Season 4

After the gnome tried to escape players a few weeks ago, it crashed near a tree at the northeast point of Slurpy Swamp, just across the way from the Slurp Juice factory. Players will need to take a trip over to the tree during a match. Next to the trunk, they will see a small gravesite with a statue of a gnome and a vase of flowers beside it.

As they approach the grave, the player will need to pay their respects to the gnome. Epic Games appears to have leaned into the meme, as players will need to "Press F to Pay Respects." For doing so, they will earn 20,000 XP. As it is not certain how long the overtime XP Xtravaganza challenges will last before Season 4 comes to an official close, players still working toward all the Season 4 cosmetics should be sure to take this chance to earn easy, free XP.

This is very likely not the last players will see of this troublemaking gnome, despite the fact that it appears to be dead. Given Season 4 is all about comic book superheroes, a medium in which very few characters who die are ever truly gone, there is a good chance this hidden secondary plot is still far from over. Some fans even speculate that, like in previous seasons, there is a chance the gnome will make a small cameo during the Nexus War event against Galactus that has been teased since the start of Season 4.
