The latest season of the wildly popular battle royale game Fortnite is starting to look like it might be the most popular. According to reports, Fortnite Chapter 3 had the most players login to play at the start of a new season.

Fortnite Chapter 3 began on December 5, bringing with it a treasure trove of new content for players to enjoy. Of course, there were new characters and skins for fans to enjoy, like The Foundation, voiced by Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson, and the addition of everyone's favorite web-slinging hero Spider-Man. However, Chapter 3 also introduced new gameplay mechanics to Fortnite. Players were surprised to find that they could now aim down sights and slide in the game. Much like every other season, Chapter 2 concluded with the Fortnite map being completely re-worked. Epic Games flipped the map, adding new locations and weather conditions, including some tied directly to the Foundation and Spider-Man. All of these new features seem to have attracted many new and returning players to Fortnite.

According to Fortnite's Twitter account, more players logged on to play the game at the start of Chapter 3 than any of the previous seasons. Fortnite took to Twitter initially to address the cause behind certain connectivity and login issues. Players were reporting delays in queuing up to play the new map and delays in the shop. While login delays and glitches are to be expected following a massive content update, in this case, it was due to the massive influx of players enjoying all the big changes.

Chapter 3 of Fortnite is yet another attempt by Epic Games to innovate and elevate the game that put battle royales on the map in gaming. While Fortnite has evolved to incorporate massive events like the Ariana Grande concert, at its core the identity of Fortnite is as a shooter. The gameplay loop of landing, scavenging supplies, and building forts for protection remains at the core of the game, so it's heartening to see that Epic Games has added new mechanics specifically tailored to those parts of the game like ADS and sliding.

While those gameplay improvements may have certainly enticed many players, the addition of a character based on the Rock and Spider-Man unquestionably played a part as well. Fortnite is well-known for collaborating with Marvel with regards to movies, so the timing of a new season with the upcoming release of Spider-Man: No Way Home made it inevitable that players would flock back to Fortnite. Whatever the reason, it's been a strong start to Fortnite's third chapter.
