Forspoken has three types of gear Frey can equip; cloaks, necklaces, and nail designs. Each piece of gear has its own special effect, such as the Aftershock nails creating a shockwave when Frey deals a finishing blow. Nails cannot be upgraded, but cloaks and necklaces can. Although a fourth slot for cloak and necklace upgrades can be unlocked, players will spend most of Forspoken with three slots for gear upgrades.

Getting gear upgrades requires farming Old Coins in Forspoken and spending them at the bookshop in Cipal. The bookshop offers eleven books at cheap costs. By buying a book, players have access to the crafting recipe for that specific upgrade. They can craft multiple versions of a recipe to add to various cloaks and necklaces. In the early stages of the game, when having the right perks is vital to survival, there are a few upgrades players should focus on first.

Best Books To Buy First in Forspoken

Players buy a book from the book shop in Forspoken

Since the most expensive gear upgrade recipes in Forspoken cost eight Old Coins, players can get the most important upgrades quickly. The best upgrades help Frey keep moving and attacking, which means "Infinitum Vitale" is a great choice. Equipping this upgrade onto a cloak or necklace makes Frey immune to any effects that slow her stamina recovery, allowing for more of Forspoken's smooth parkour. This makes "Ode to Vim" a waste of Old Coins, as the recipe is just a weaker version of "Infinitum Vitale".

In a similar vein, "Endure, Thrive, Survive" makes "Of Poisons, Toxins, Venoms, Venins, and Toxicants" a useless Forspoken gear upgrade since the former offers immunity to all poison as opposed to heightened resistance from the latter. This also makes "Nargok the Unstoppable" better than "Fail Not, Falter Not" in terms of counter-acting attack debuffs. It is more important to prioritize "Nargok the Unstoppable" over "Endure, Thrive, Survive" so players can use their attack buffs without any interruption, a much-needed trait for days when players got an attack-boosting roll when they played Forspoken's popular dice game Partha.

One of the best gear upgrades in all of Forspoken is "To Thine Own Self Be True", which increases the duration of buffs Frey casts on herself. With the huge number of support spells available throughout the game, this is an incredible upgrade that should always be equipped on one of Frey's gear items. "Ballad of the Boiling Blood" is also amazing, as it increases critical hit damage.

Each gear upgrade in Forspoken requires combining crafting materials at a crafting station or camp, which players unlock during Chapter Three. Each upgrade requires a different amount of materials to place on a cloak or necklace. Pairing some of the best early-game cloaks in Forspoken with the best upgrades can help Frey solve any challenge thrown at her.
