The former God of War Director David Jaffe is confident that God of War: Ragnarok will release as a cross-gen title for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. David Jaffe worked as a director for both the original God of War and God of War 2 which released back in 2007. Since then, he hasn't worked on the God of War series, which includes the release of the 2018 God of War and God of War: Ragnarok. While he doesn't have direct experience on the current projects, he still has an informed perspective on the series.

God of War 2018 released to excellent reviews and looked fantastic on the PlayStation 4 platform. Regardless of how well God of War was received, PlayStation owners may be wary of cross-gen titles in the future. Cyberpunk 2077's console launch was a major shock and has taken away confidence in players who want to play new PlayStation 5 titles on their PlayStation 4. Just a few month ago, cross-gen titles likely would have been a relief for previous-gen hardware, but now the idea is a mixed bag.

Despite the Cyberpunk 2077 console launch, David Jaffe seems certain that God of War: Ragnarok will release on both generations of PlayStation, and hopefully without the drama. Games Radar found a clip from Jaffe on Twitter in which he responds to a viewer in his stream that asked about the release of the next God of War. Jaffe responded with, "I'm sure the next God of War will be PS4, PS5. Of course it will. Jim Ryan has pretty much said as much." To be clear, Jaffe is not working on God of War: Ragnarok, so what he says is not guaranteed. His mention of Jim Ryan also isn't exactly true, but he does make a point.

Jim Ryan, who is the PlayStation Head, spoke to The Telegraph back in November and he was questioned about whether God of War: Ragnarok would be a cross-gen title. He refuses to answer the question outright, but he does go on to give some context about his PlayStation 4 philosophy going forward. "We’ve got a community of PS4 gamers 100 million-strong. It would be wrong to walk away from those people too early," he says, and Ryan goes on to mention how much the PlayStation 4 has been used during the lockdowns of 2020. "Why would we stop giving them games," he says afterwards, and that may be what David Jaffe is referring to. To make that claim even stronger from Jaffe, fans of PlayStation can also look to Horizon Forbidden West to see that a PlayStation 5 game is already confirmed to be cross-gen.

Cross-gen titles for PlayStation have unfortunately become a worry and a debate after the console release of Cyberpunk 2077. While PlayStation can't keep up the cross-gen titles forever, God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn have proven that games can still look and run amazing on the PlayStation 4. Fans shouldn't be too quick to judge upcoming PlayStation 5 titles if they happen to be cross-gen. However, if Cyberpunk 2077 scenarios become a pattern, PlayStation may rethink cross-gen. Until then, fans will need to wait for an official God of War: Ragnarok cross-gen announcement.
