A new image of The Forever Purge is revealed, alongside story details. Created by James DeMonaco, the Purge franchise launched in 2013. The film’s central conceit of an annual Purge night, where the government allows virtually any crime for 12 hours, has been a hit at the box office. The previous four movies have grossed more than $450 million against a combined production budget of $35 million.

The Forever Purge, set for release on July 9, is billed as the franchise’s final entry. Directed by Everardo Gout, with DeMonaco writing the screenplay, it was previously known that the film would feature a Mexican couple escaping from a drug cartel. But now, as it draws closer to its long-awaited premiere date, more has been revealed about the movie’s plot.

As part of USA Today’s preview of the upcoming summer movie season, a new image of The Forever Purge was revealed alongside story details. It’s noted that the film will unfold after the annual Purge is abolished, though a group of masked outlaw Purgers in Texas refuse to give up the fight. You check out one of those masked Purgers in the new image below.

Forever Purge

The premise is an indication of the way that each franchise has tried to differentiate itself, while still delivering the requisite thrills expected from a Purge movie. The first installment, starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey, focused on one family’s ordeal as they tried to survive the annual Purge. The second movie, The Purge: Anarchy, widened its scope and showed how it was nearly impossible to survive the night while trying to move from one place to another. Other entries, such as The First Purge, dug deep into the film’s mythology to trace the story’s beginnings. The Forever Purge could serve as a fitting finish for the popular horror saga, lingering on the last gasps of the annual Purge and showing a battle against the people that aren’t willing to let go of a twisted tradition.

It will be interesting, as well, to catch glimpses of how the rest of society is adjusting to the Purge’s abolishment, although it’s worth noting that franchise star Frank Grillo has hinted that there could be more Purge movies down the line, noting that he’s discussed the possibility with DeMonaco. While that could very well be likely, particularly if The Forever Purge proves to be a success, the fifth entry seems designed to send off the horror staple with one more round of masked villains trying to kill off a group of sympathetic protagonists.
