James DeMonaco's The Purge franchise has arguably grown stronger as it has progressed. Beginning in 2013, the series about an annual 24-hour holiday from society's civil anti-violence laws has evolved from an indie high-concept sci-fi/horror outing into a topical commentary on the rule of law in the United States.

The fifth and final chapter in the series, The Forever Purge, is due in theaters on July 9, 2021. Although the plot details have been kept under wraps, fans have been speculating, and Everardo Gout will direct from a script written by DeMonaco. Josh Lucas, Will Patton, Leven Rambin, Cassidy Freeman, and Ana de la Reguera are set to star.

Good - Post-Election Riots

The Purge 3

Critically speaking, The Purge: Election Year is the highest-rated film in the franchise thus far. As such, it not only makes sense to go back to the well but also given the potentially tumultuous election results in this very strange political cycle, it could really raise the stakes in a believable way.

Given the current debate over the legitimacy of mail-in voting, The Forever Purge could easily entail a raucous and wildly chaotic post-election melee in the streets just as the annual holiday takes place.

Bad - Alien Invasion

The Purge 2013

One hilariously awful Forever Purge plotline just might include hordes of angry American citizens ready to blow off violent steam on the annual holiday, only to be met by a deadly alien incursion.

Imagine Cowboys and Aliens set in the present, but instead of cowboys, the extraterrestrial beings face-off with gangs of repressed citizens ready to unleash pent-up anger. Many of the American citizens who may not like each other could be forced to work together for the greater good.

Good - Racial Injustice

The Purge Anarchy 1

At its best, The Purge franchise tackles timely and topical subject matter. At this moment, there are few subjects more important than racial injustice, police brutality, and systemic prejudice.

The Forever Purge would do wise to address this timely topic in some form or fashion. Real footage captured from ordinary citizens could be used to depict untoward police activity and widespread protests in the streets. Body-cam found-footage from police officers could also be incorporated in a gritty, handheld manner.

Bad - Zombie Outbreak

The Purge Election Year

As cliche as it gets, nothing would derail The Purge series faster than pitting legions of violent American citizens up against an undead army of flesh-starved corpses. Call if Fear the Walking Forever Purge.

It would be pretty laughable to watch the annual prohibition of crime devolve into a giant battle between human beings and zombified ghouls fresh from the grave. Then again, what a perfect rule for a zombie outbreak to achieve the maximum amount of carnage without any authorities or law enforcement to stop them.

Good - White Supremacy

The Purge Election Year 2

In keeping with the racial injustice theme, The Forever Purge could very well feature a white supremacy plotline in which aggrieved Americans attempt to take out their ire on minority populations. It's a frighteningly real idea fostered by the current political climate.

Of course, the white supremacists would end up being the main villains as the annual purge allows righteous citizens to exact justified vengeance if need be.

Bad - Foreign Attack

The Purge Anarchy 2

One cheesily patriotic Forever Purge idea might include bands of American denizens set to do violence against one another on the annual holiday, only to redirect their energy to fend-off a foreign attack of some kind. Perhaps terrorists?

If not a full-fledged act of war, one idea could include a building being infiltrated by a violent terrorist group just as The Purge begins, where everyone suddenly turns into John McClane and mercilessly makes the terrorists die hard.

Good - Border Immigration

The Purge Election Year 3

Given the large Latin cast that includes Ana de la Reguera, Veronica Falcon, Tenoch Huerta, Yomari Cruz, Emily Trujilo, and many more, it is quite probable that The Forever Purge will deal with the salient issue of American immigration at the Southern border.

The theory is bolstered by Cruz listed as a Latinx Anchor, Baker Wiles as an Anti-Purge protestor, and Mark Krenik playing a New Founding Fathers of America soldier. Throw in Mexican director Everardo Gout and this theory becomes pretty airtight.

Bad - International Espionage

The Purge 2013

Few ideas could be more ludicrous than one akin to a 007/Purge mashup. Imagine an international espionage ring with the extravagant resources of a James Bond film doing battle with hyper-violent street marauders.

Better yet, what if a whole team of criminal ringleaders like the best-of Bond villains went up against a horde of ultra-aggressive American purgers. The only idea more ludicrous than that would be an Expendables/Purge crossover in which geriatric '80s action stars take on the mass purgers.

Good - COVID-19

The Purge 2013 2

Since The Forever Purge was shut down this past summer due to the global COVID-19 outbreak, it only makes sense that Gout and DeMonaco reference it in some way. Setting The Purge amid a global pandemic is not only a great idea on its face, but the current circumstances make it completely believable.

Imagine the sheer logistics of holding a Purge holiday in the midst of this current medical climate. The masks, the social distancing, the inherent risks of bodily contact, and the dire consequences of such would add such a fascinating and refreshing wrinkle to the franchise formula as well as to the viral outbreak subgenre.

Bad - Purge On A Plane

One surefire way to induce rolling laughter from the audience would be to set The Purge on an airplane. Imagine if the annual law was extended to the air and sea, thereby allowing those in-flight to participate in the lawless tradition with fellow passengers.

A situation could be conjured in which, due to the intense violence on the ground, a gigantic airplane is forced to remain in the skies until it's safe to land. While up in the air, a claustrophobic purge would ensue in a way that makes Snakes on a Plane look like Citizen Kane.
