Season 2 of Forces of Destiny has begun, with two new Star Wars shorts highlighting Sabine and Rey. Ever since Disney acquired Lucasfilm, they've been expanding the new canon universe of Star Wars to include comics, books, and various other forms of media. And while the films still reign supreme, shows like Rebels and the Forces of Destiny initiative are targeting a new generation of fans.
Earlier this year, the new series of shorts and toy line known as Forces of Destiny arrived. Both the figures and cartoons put the spotlight on the many female characters of the universe, from Leia and Padme to Hera and Ahsoka. Last week, we got to see the trailer for the new season and get a hint of the adventures to come. Now, the first two episodes of season 2 have arrived.
Disney has posted two new Forces of Destiny episodes online following yesterday's premiere of the first of two half-hour specials on the Disney Channel. The first special featured both previously released and new episodes, including 'Newest Recruit' (posted above). In it, we see a mission with Sabine from Rebels where she works alongside Ketsu. While the two have been both friends and rivals, the episode sees them grow into allies. A second episode, 'Tracker Trouble,' also debuted, and it puts the spotlight on Rey, Finn, and Han.
While the Sabine episode helps flesh out her relationship with one of the Rebellion's newest recruits, 'Tracker Trouble' dives into the story of Rey and Finn before they join the Resistance. Along with the debut of Finn, Han and Chewie show up in Forces of Destiny for the first time in a story set right before the team arrives at Maz Kanata's place. After finding a tracker placed on the Millennium Falcon by Unkar, the team must work together to make it out alive.
This isn't the first set of shorts featuring Sabine and Rey, either. The Mandalorian previously met Leia in an episode last season, while the premiere of the show focused on Rey and BB-8 after they first met on Jakku. Likely, the two heroes will continue to play into the Forces of Destiny initiative.
Along with this month's premiere of the new episodes of Forces of Destiny, Lucasfilm will be rolling out the fourth and final season of Rebels. The show will return in just two weeks, and already promotion has begun teasing how it will finally connect to the events of Rogue One and A New Hope. Last week, we got to see the first poster for the new season. Between Rebels and Forces of Destiny, fans will have plenty to hold them over until The Last Jedi arrives.
Star Wars: Forces of Destiny's second half-hour long television special will air October 29th on the Disney Channel.
