The first trailer for Apple TV+'s For All Mankind season 3 shows the space race to get to Mars. For All Mankind is a science-fiction series that imagines an alternate timeline where the space race never slowed down, eschewing in a whole new set of possibilities for space exploration. The series was created by Battlestar Galactica's Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi and stars Joel Kinnaman, Shantel VanSanten, Jodi Balfour, Wrenn Schmidt, Sonya Walger, Krys Marshall, Cynthy Wu, Casey W. Johnson, and Coral Peña.

For All Mankind season 1 established a world where the Soviet Union was the first to land and walk on the moon, with the United States following behind them, eventually forming the Jamestown moon base, where much of the drama takes place well into season 2. For All Mankind season 2 debuted in 2021 and saw the continued expansion of Jamestown as NASA began working harder to go beyond the moon, with tensions between the Russians mounting more and more, to the point of a potential nuclear war. The show has thus far jumped ahead a decade between seasons, and For All Mankind season 3 will be no different.

In the first trailer for For All Mankind season 3 (via Apple TV+) it's revealed that the time period is 1995, focusing on the race to Mars. The United States, Russia, and a private entity (similar to Elon Musk's Space X) are all in the running to get to the Red Planet first, while battling each other every step of the way, be it figuratively, politically, or literally. Edi Gathegi joins the series as a regular, playing Dev Ayesa, described as "a charismatic visionary with his sights set on the stars." Gathegi's Ayesa is seen in the trailer as representing the private interest looking to get to Mars, which puts a big challenge in front of NASA and the Russian astronauts. For All Mankind seasons 1 and 2 teetered between real-life events and characters versus fictional or alternate visions, while still set in a time frame and technological age that closely mapped the real-world timeline. The inclusion of the Jamestown moon base was the biggest deviation from actual history and helped push the show further into a sci-fi direction, rather than simply an alternate history version. For All Mankind season 3 will lean even deeper into that aspect, according to Kinneman, who will return as Edward Baldwin. Kinnaman says the show will be "solidly in sci-fi territory" in its next season, but done in a "grounded" way.

For All Mankind has been a solid series for Apple TV+, helped largely by the cast and the showrunners steering the ship, offering something exciting, yet provocative. Alternate history shows can be hit-or-miss, but For All Mankind appears to be capturing viewers' attention. What's more, the timeline jump of a decade between seasons opens up a whole new realm of possibilities for the show if it receives a season 4. It will be interesting to see how For All Mankind jumps forward into the future, well beyond what astronauts of Earth have yet to accomplish, and if it still comes off as feeling real or pivots to straight sci-fi. Either way, viewers appear to be thrilled for more, and For All Mankind season 3 looks ready to live up to the hype when it debuts on June 10th, 2022.
