'Footloose' Remake Cast Announced

Paramount has officially revealed the identities of the main cast members that will star in their remake of the 1980s flick Footloose, which is being written and directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow).

A 26-year old Kevin Bacon starred in the original Footloose as a hip teenager from Chicago who butts heads with the local heads of his new home - an old-fashioned town out West, where dancing and rock music are outlawed.  With the help of some admittedly impressive dance moves and now classic '80s tunes like "Let's Hear it for the Boy" and the title track, the young man sets out to fix this most unfathomable of problems.

Dancer/sort-of actor Kenny Wormald (from the MTV series Dancelife) will step into Bacon's iconic role for the remake, while Miles Teller (wait, who?) will play a knuckle-headed local that befriends Wormald's city boy.  Julianne Hough (Show Me the Money) will take on the requisite love interest role and play the daughter of the small town's conservative preacher (Dennis Quaid, taking over for John Lithgow in the original).

Brewer will work from a screenplay of his own creation, which itself is based off Dean Pitchford's script for the 1984 original.  Suffice it to say, I imagine that Brewer's version of Footloose will probably be a bit more family-friendly and lack the overt blaxploitation influences of his previous film, Black Snake Moan.

Those curious as to why Brewer feels the need to remake Footloose (financial motivation aside) can take his comments on the matter (see below) into consideration:

"I saw 'Footloose' in my hometown theater when I was 13-years-old and it rocked my world.  It was a teenage rebellion movie that explored the struggles of faith and family in a small town, and it had an awesome soundtrack.  I can promise 'Footloose' fans that I will be true to the spirit of the original film.  But I still gotta put my own Southern grit into it and kick it into 2011.. It's going to be a blast!"

So what do you think?  Are you excited for this remake of Footloose?  Any thoughts on how it could be updated for the 21st century?  Sound off in the comments section below.

The Footloose remake is tentatively scheduled to arrive in theaters in the U.S. in 2011.
