There can be several reasons why Fleabag was listed on former President Obama's favorite shows of 2019. We may look to the captivating story whose dark humor pokes at life's harsh reality. Or perhaps the drama-filled storyline and engaging dialogue which keeps us on our toes as the story develops and truths are uncovered. Indeed, several strong points can be mentioned when it comes to Fleabag despite there only being two seasons. It must be why fans of the binge-worthy television series begged its producers for a third season and why the request might be worth considering. Nevertheless, Fleabag is a great show and in this article, we will look at one of the many reasons why: its characters.

From the titular character's highly sarcastic and slightly sad personality to her passive-aggressive stepmother, let us take a look at the show's main characters ranked by intelligence.

Butt Guy

Indubitably, the butt guy was one of the most fascinating characters of the show. Think of a refurbished version of your typical egotistical asshole who is far more concerned about his own needs and image than yours. The butt guy features on this list at this spot because of his inability to relate to others and see the world beyond his little bubble.

He managed to hurt Fleabag quite a lot and still attempted to waltz back into her life when it was all said and done. And something about this overly shallow persona somehow makes us think it was to make up for his lack of brain cells.

Martin

Claire's soon to be ex-husband Martin ranks low on this list for so many reasons. While he did reflect some intelligence in being able to nab a gorgeous woman to take care of his needs and that of his sexually inappropriate child, he could not pull it off for long.

While also being slightly creepy with an inability to respect personal boundaries, Martin was exposed by Fleabag on multiple occasions for being an indecent being. And although he did offer some comic relief throughout the script, Martin still ranks low on this list simply because he all reminds us of what one guy we cannot stand.

Harry

"Poor Harry" is the thought that came to mind often during the show and his inability to free himself from Fleabag's shenanigans is one of the many reasons why he ranks as such on this list. Harry was a hopeless romantic who clearly deserved better than whatever the on-and-off relationship Fleabag was offering.

And eventually, he did leave which hints at his growth throughout the show and his recognition of old patterns that no longer served him. The art of moving on requires deeper insight and emotional intelligence to go forward in life.

Fleabag's Dad

Fleabag's father left us confused a lot of times throughout the series. In truly damaged family dynamics and unaddressed father issues, he managed to wow us with his inability to protect his daughters from the evil whims of his new wife.

Though we did not get to see much of his intelligence throughout the show, we surely could tell he made certain harmful decisions out of loneliness rather than the pure intention to harm his children. And on a few occasions, he did manage to offer Fleabag a slew of useful advice so she can do better for herself.

Fleabag

Phoebe Waller-Bridge in Fleabag season 1

Fleabag ranks third on this list because of the ingenious ways she utilizes to navigate her catastrophic life. Despite being an emotional wreck, the titular character manages to make you feel incredibly bad for herself as you observe the deeper implications of her life.

Fans grow extremely connected to her until we find out the reason behind her former best friend and business partner's death. Fleabag wows us with her sarcasm, hilarious commentary, and messy emotion-management techniques.

Claire

As the show's story develops, we can clearly tell that Fleabag's sister Claire means well. And although she does not always have the right ways to verbalize it, we can surely understand why. Her ranking on this list is justified by the simple mistake of returning to a man who clearly did not deserve her.

Though, she did manage to pull herself together and eventually go after the ending she deserved. It requires a higher depth of emotional intelligence to look introspectively and make changes accordingly. It is something Fleabag lacks and Claire, although cold, fully portrays by the end of the show.

Fleabag's stepmother

The evil stepmother takes a new form in this sensational series as Fleabag's stepmother conveys her aggressivity in a passive, yet equally damaging way. She ranks on this list as the second most intelligent because she managed to motion from godmother to stepmother in a short amount of time. Her evil evidently relies on her genius ability to not only get herself in the position but also keep herself there.

Her wit and snarkiness make for quite the comical moments on the show. And despite her intelligence showcasing itself in her nastiest acts, it still deserves some form of recognition. The woman knows what she is doing after all.

The Priest

The "hot" priest easily ranks at number one on this list as he offered a lot of insight to Fleabag on the show. While his short adventure with the show's star leads to a lot of introspection and emotional development, he also underwent a lot of changes himself. His intellectual leanings in entanglement with his honest approach to life and religious knowledge surely speaks to a character with higher intelligence than most characters on the series.

And although their relationship ended the way it did, we can say he positively contributed to Fleabag's life and offered the story a deeper, almost philosophical meaning. In considering all of the latter, we can understand why he tops this list.
