Warning! Spoilers for The Flash #768 below!
Wally West had just become the main Flash of the DC Universe again and it seems the speedster just changed his mind about reclaiming the title. In a brand-new preview for The Flash #768, Wally surprises the entire Justice League by revealing that he's quitting in order to spend more time with his family.
No character has experienced more lows in the past few years than Wally. From being the culprit in a bizarre murder mystery plot, to losing his family, to becoming Dr. Manhattan and playing a key role in the DC Multiverse, to being taken over by dark forces in Future State, Wally has had a rough go of it. However, more recently things have finally begun to turn around, as he was reunited with his family and named the new Flash as Barry Allen revealed he's questing across the new Omniverse. It seemed that Wally, the former Flash, would begin a new journey as the hero. However, now it seems he's instead retiring from the role.
In the previews for The Flash #768 by Jeremy Adams, Brandon Peterson, Marco Santucci, David Lafuente, Mike Atiyeh, Arif Prianto, and Luis Guerrero, Wally informs the Justice League that he's retiring to spend more time with his family. With all of the trauma that he's suffered, he says he "can't do it anymore," and that it's not fair to the superteam or to his family.
When Barry tries to intervene, the Green Arrow tells him that it's unfair to make him keep on going and poses him an important question: "Do you want him to lose control again?" Having seen Roy die (he's in for a big surprise), Oliver Queen is clearly protective of the young hero trying to figure his own stuff out. Eventually, Barry comes around to Wally's resignation and tells him that he supports him and always will. In order to cut himself off from the Speed Force, he asks Barry for one last race.
While it might be shocking to see Wally walk away from being the new Flash in the DC Universe almost as soon as he's accepted the title, it makes sense why he would want to walk away from it upon further reflection. Wally has been through so much trauma in the last few years and now that his family is back in his life, he just wants to spend time with them and not have to deal with more end-of-the-world catastrophes. It's clear Wally West is done being the Flash. The Flash #768 is in comic stores on March, 30.
