Now that The Flash has become a proven hit for The CW, the series is looking to expand its cast of DC characters even further in season two. It would appear that, in fact, a significant part of the show's next batch of episodes will center on Wally West.
Flash showrunners have already confirmed that the character will become a major player starting in season two. Wally, of course, was introduced in the DC comics as Kid Flash and ultimately inherited the mantle of The Flash from Barry Allen. Now we know who will be playing him when he shows up on The CW's DC series, in live-action form.
According to Variety, Keiynan Lonsdale will join The Flash cast as Wally West during the show's second season. While it's unclear how he will fit into the season's storyline, Lonsdale will apparently be a big part of the action, as he is going to be a series regular from the start. Similarly, it remains to be seen if Lonsdale will be crossing over to sister shows Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow, but given the interconnected nature of The CW's DC television universe, there's a reasonable chance that this will happen, sooner or later.
In the DC comics universe, Wally is the nephew of Iris West. However, since we haven't met any siblings for the version of the character on The Flash (where she's played by Candice Patton), there's a possiblity that his origin may be amended to fit the show. Of course, given that The Flash isn't shy from toying with time travel with its narrative, any number of explanations could be involved when it comes to Wally's introduction on the series.
Lonsdale - who played Uriah in The Divergent Series: Insurgent and will reprise the role in its upcoming sequel, Allegiant - Part 1 - is a relative newcomer, and his addition to the cast could certainly keep things fresh. After all, considering how quickly this particular branch of the DC television universe is growing, it's not a bad idea to plant the seeds from more heroes as soon as possible. Not to mention, we know for a fact he won't be the only new player who joins the Arrow/Flash universe in the near future...
The Flash returns for season 2 on Tuesday, October 6, at 8pm on The CW; Arrow returns for season 4 on Wednesday, October 7, at 8pm on The CW; DC's Legends of Tomorrow is expected to air on The CW in early 2016.
