The Flash returns tonight after a fiery mid-season finale that brought Barry Allen closer than ever to finding out the truth about what happened to his mother, in his pursuit of the mysterious enemy known only as Reverse Flash. There's also the return of Caitlin's presumed-dead fiancé Ronnie to deal with, as Ronnie seems extremely damaged by his trauma and will require a little training before he can become the comic book hero Firestorm.
In fact, there's a whole lot that's going to be thrown at Barry in the second half of The Flash's first season. Weather Wizard (Liam McIntyre) will arrive on the scene to claim revenge for the death of his brother in the show's pilot; the Trickster (Mark Hamill) acquires a copycat criminal (Devon Graye); and there's even going to be some time travel thrown in for good measure.
In between battling baddies there are quite a few unanswered questions for Barry to solve, such as the question of who killed his mother and the identity of Reverse Flash. There are plenty of fan theories speculating as to how these mysteries will be solved, but in an interview with EW actor Grant Gustin promises that the show will find a way to surprise its fans:
"There’s a big twist that even surprised me. I’ve seen all the predictions online. No one has predicted the big twist that’s coming at the end of this season."
Of course, telling people that there's a big twist will only make them work even harder to try and figure out what that twist will be. Perhaps Gustin is bluffing and the twist is that there is no twist.
The second half of the season will also see the return of Leonard Snart a.k.a Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), who teams up with Mick Rory a.k.a. Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell) in his efforts to take down the Flash. Purcell explained that the two of them have "a very powerful love/hate relationship" and that Leonard's cooler, collected nature is often needed to rein in Mick's hot temper.
"I have heard rumors that there is a larger plan, but at the moment, Snart is eager to reestablish himself as top dog and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen... My motivation is to figure out where Flash’s weak spots are. I’ve already figured out that he has a heart and he cares about people. He’s got a team and everyone on that team is vulnerable to predators like Cold and Heat Wave, and if I can go through them to get to The Flash, I certainly will."
Out of all of Barry's compatriots Leonard should probably target Cisco first as revenge for landing him with such a dorky nickname, but apparently it's another member of the team who is attacked in order to get to Barry. Captain Cold was easily one of the best villains showcased in the first half of the season, so it will be great to see him back on the show.
