The Flash and Supergirl musical crossover is arguably one of the most highly anticipated episodes of both of those shows in their respective seasons. The CW is banking on the same success of the first Flash/Supergirl crossover episode that was seen last season and the fact that both Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist broke into television on Glee, meaning that they both have substantial singing chops.

Few details have come out about the musical crossover episode save that another Glee alumnus, Darren Criss, will be playing Music Meister, a role which most fans had earmarked for Neil Patrick Harris, who voiced the character on Batman: the Brave and the Bold. Now, we get some insight into the plot of the crossover.

A report for TV Line teases Iris West (Candice Patton), will have a substantial part to play in the crossover episode according to The Flash co-showrunner Aaron Helbing:

“She plays a pretty key role in the musical episode. The story really centers around Iris. Aside from Barry and Kara, Iris plays a huge role in the musical.”

While Patton will not be signing in the episode, Jesse L. Martin, who plays Iris' dad Joe West, will be bringing his Broadway experience to The Flash/Supergirl crossover. Fans have seen Martin sing before when it was revealed that his Earth-2 persona was a lounge singer. Additionally, this will not be Gustin's first time singing on the show - he displayed his skills in a karaoke scene during the first season.

Given what an important figure Iris is in Barry's life it makes sense that she would be featured in The Flash/Supergirl crossover, especially since it appears to be set in The Flash continuity, rather than the Supergirl continuity like the last time. What would be really interesting is if the musical was all about saving Iris from Savitar in the future that has fixated Team Flash for the majority of the show's recent episodes.

It's unclear whether Helbing's comment indicates Patton will have a singing role in the musical crossover (she wasn't included in the previously reported list of stars that would use their pipes in the episode) or if she'll have a non-musical key role. Certainly an important part in the episode may add a little bit more dynamic to her character, who has largely been shunted off to the side as a damsel to be rescued by the Flash - this season in particular. Hopefully her inclusion in the musical episode is a fun, fresh divergence from the regular drama on The Flash and gives Iris something cool to do.
