The Flash season 7 will premiere in February 2021, The CW announced today. Always one of the Arrowverse's most well-known shows, The Flash is now the oldest in the franchise thanks to Arrow's series finale early this year. Season 6 was a major one for the show and its characters due to Crisis on Infinite Earths. The crossover event saw Barry Allen team up with other DC heroes to stop the villainous Anti-Monitor. Though he was predicted to die in Crisis, Barry survived the event, which had a dramatic impact on the rest of season 6. In the latter half of the season, the Star Labs team battled Eva McCulloch, the new Mirror Master. This led to Iris and others being trapped in the Mirrorverse, where they remained at the end of season 6.
That was not always The Flash's intention, as season 6 was cut short due to the coronavirus. This means the conclusion of the Mirror Master's story will be saved for season 7. Due to the pandemic, The CW decided to forgo its usual fall return for its original series, instead holding all of the Arrowverse shows for 2021. The Flash only recently began filming season 7, after a COVID-19 testing delay for Vancouver-based productions led to the postponement of the show's start date. However, audiences should be reassured by the news The Flash now has its season 7 premiere date set.
The CW made the announcement via The Flash's official Twitter account. Season 7 will begin Tuesday, February 23 at 8 p.m. The premiere will serve as a lead-in to Superman & Lois, which airs its series premiere the same night.
Viewers have been waiting a long time for an announcement like this, especially now that The Flash has begun filming season 7. Though it's exciting to finally know when the show will return, some may be disappointed it's not sooner. As The CW's original announcement about holding the Arrowverse shows until 2021 didn't specify a return month, January was a possibility for The Flash. The February date means there will be over nine months between the season 6 finale and season 7 premiere.
Despite the long wait, The CW is smart to give The Flash more time before its return. Considering the testing delay issue the show has already faced, it's possible more problems will arise during filming. The later premiere means the network has a little more wiggle room. Even if The Flash has to pause production, it could be ready to begin airing season 7 by February. CW executives are likely keeping a careful eye on the film industry. With so many movies forced into multiple delays, it makes sense the network is trying to avoid a similar fate for its shows. Hopefully, The Flash season 7 is ready in plenty of time for 2021, allowing viewers to finally check back in with Barry, Iris, and the rest of Team Flash.
