Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for The Flash Season 7's premiere.

Many fans were disappointed by the premiere episode of The Flash Season 7 and how it handled the death of Nash Wells and the Council of Wells. While providing a suitable sacrifice worthy of the characters' importance, the emotional resonance was largely felt to be a bit understated, even if it was necessary to kickstart the storyline of the new season.

An original character unique to the Arrowverse, Harrison Wells was the founder of STAR Labs; the scientific think-tank whose malfunctioning particle accelerator was destined to be responsible for empowering a number of metahumans, including The Flash. That destiny was altered by the time-traveling Reverse Flash, who murdered and replaced Wells after accidentally becoming trapped in the past while attempting to murder his archenemy as a child. Later seasons of The Flash introduced several alternate universe versions of Harrison Wells, who assisted Team Flash with fighting various cosmic threats. Collectively known as the Council of Wells, all of these alternate Wells became psychic "ghosts" following Crisis on Infinite Earths, sharing the brain of the one Wells to survive the disaster; self-described archeologist, geologist and myth-buster Nash Wells.

As The Flash Season 7 premiere opened, Team Flash was still struggling with the problem of empowering an Artificial Speed Force they had constructed to replace the original one that Barry Allen accidentally destroyed during Crisis on Infinite Earths. The Council of Wells came up with a solution, theorizing they could use their own synaptic particles as a source of perpetual energy. Unfortunately, this would require all of them, including Nash, to die, since an organic receptor would be required to safely contain all the energy until the Artificial Speed Force absorbed it. While Nash spent most of the episode struggling with the decision and trying to think of an alternative that wouldn't require his death, he ultimately made the decision to sacrifice himself for the good of the multiverse and restore The Flash's powers. Before Nash's body was completely absorbed, several Council of Wells members had the chance to speak through him, thanking Barry Allen for giving them all the chance to become better men.

While this scene was touching and a fantastic display of acting by Tom Cavanagh (who has played the many versions of Harrison Wells through six seasons of The Flash), many fans were bothered that Barry Allen was the only member of the show's ensemble who got the chance to say goodbye to the Council of Wells. This put a decidedly odd spin on the end of the episode, when Barry briefly mentioned having to call Cisco Ramon and Caitlin Snow to let them know that Nash was dead, noting that Harry Wells had been like a second father to Cisco. Apart from that, the episode completely ignored the many relationships the various Wells had with the rest of Team Flash, such as the student/mentor relationship shared between detectives Ralph Dibny and Sherloque Wells.

It seems likely this convoluted send-off was the result of the real-world issues that required shuffling around the ensemble of The Flash, including actress Danielle Panabaker's maternity leave. Regardless, while fans might have wished for the Wells to be given a touching farewell with more of the ensemble present, it was necessary for Nash and the other Wells to die now in order to repower Barry and get Season 7 of The Flash up and running. It seems likely the rest of the cast will get the chance to mourn their departed allies in a later episode, assuming this truly is the end of the Council of Wells in the Arrowverse.
