Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Flash season 7, episode 2!
Following a major character's return in The Flash, Grant Gustin weighs in on what it means for the show. The Arrowverse series is back after an extended hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, which also shortened season 6 by three episodes. Those final hours were added to the start of season 7 instead, focusing on Team Flash defeating Eva McCulloch/Mirror Master and rescuing Iris, Kamilla, and Singh from the Mirrorverse. Season 7, episode 2, "The Speed of Thought," finally brought Iris back to the real world. However, it wasn't the hour's most shocking moment. That came in the final scene, when The Flash's original Harrison Wells was brought back to life.
The Wells characters have played a major role on the show since season 1. The Flash's season 7 premiere found Nash, and by extension, seemingly all of the other Wells, sacrificing themselves for Barry's speed. However, the final scene in episode 2 shows that wasn't actually the case. The original Harrison Wells appears to be resituated by multiverse particles, though it's unclear if Nash's sacrifice is related. As this Wells was murdered by Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash before he took over his body, he doesn't actually have a relationship with Team Flash, making his return particularly intriguing.
Speaking with TVLine, Gustin weighed in on Wells' return, expressing his excitement for what's to come in the rest of The Flash season 7. He also explained he had an idea the reveal was on the way:
I had an inkling that we would tease this and explore this at some point this season. When we shot the last episode, it felt like it was the actual end of the Wellses on the show, and Tom Cavanagh’s run on the show, so to see this tease of arguably — and I personally say without a doubt — the most epic and iconic character he’s played on the show was exciting. We’re going to get to see the real Harrison Wells for the first time, because we’ve only ever seen Harrison Wells who is taken over by Thawne. It’s a character that I know Tom loves to portray, but as usual it’s going to be Harrison Wells with a twist, and we will get to see Tom do something brand new again with this character.
It's clear from Gustin's words the original Wells' return is going to have a major impact on season 7. As the actor notes, it will be the first time Team Flash gets the chance to interact with the real Wells, despite the number of other versions who have turned up over the years. Gustin's enthusiasm for this particular incarnation of Wells is a good sign for The Flash season 7. It's hard to predict when he'll reveal himself to Barry and the others, but it likely won't be until the end of episode 3 or start of episode 4. Until then, Team Flash will have their hands full taking on Eva.
It's also exciting to think about Tom Cavanagh digging into yet another version of Wells. He's been an asset to the show since season 1, somehow creating multiple versions of the same character who each have a slightly different relationship with the group. It seems likely that will continue with the original version of Harrison, exploring new layers of The Flash's multiverse hero.
