Warning: Spoilers for The Flash season 8, episode 14

The Flash has already spoiled how its Frost twist is going to play out. The show’s Deathstorm story saw the series say goodbye to yet another longtime Team Flash member when Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) died stopping the villain. She’s gone, but now the show is suggesting that she can be brought back somehow.

The Flash season 8, episode 14, titled “Funeral for a Friend” was a story about everyone trying to move on from Frost’s death, which has absolutely devastated the group. Dealing with the pain even hindered their ability to take down Blockbuster. However, they pushed through it and ultimately found ways to honor Frost’s legacy at the end of the episode. But as it turned out, one character in particular actually has no intention of moving on or accepting her death. The episode’s ending revealed that Caitlin is on a mission to bring Frost back to life – and she expects Chillblaine (Jon Cor) to help her do it. The implication is that she’ll either use cloning or perhaps even restore things to the way they were before, back when Frost and Caitlin shared a body.

Regardless of the lengths Caitlin and possibly Chillblaine will go to in The Flash season 8 to revive Frost, it’s hard to imagine this new arc leading to her resurrection. Panabaker’s comments on the matter are a clear indication that Frost’s death can’t be temporary. The actress admitted to having trepidations about killing her off because she wasn’t comfortable with doing a “fake-out”. She said that it had to be a “real death, in order to feel truthful and honest”. This is what made Frost’s death work, and as Panabaker herself has noted, walking back her death would ruin it. Panabaker pointing out the problems of doing a fake-out makes it all the more unlikely that The Flash will reverse Frost’s death.

It seems that reviving Frost isn’t the goal or the point of Caitlin’s next story in The Flash season 8. Instead, it looks like it’s more about extending Caitlin’s grieving period and giving her new challenges to overcome. This does make sense, considering that getting over what happened to Frost shouldn’t be a single-episode dilemma for Caitlin in the same way that it was for Barry, Iris, Chester, Allegra, Cecille, and Joe. After all, the sad and unfortunate truth of the matter is that Caitlin kicked off the circumstances that led to Frost’s death. Determined to save “Ronnie”, Caitlin went against Team Flash’s decision and unwittingly turned the Black Flame into Deathstorm.

In light of the pain and the guilt Caitlin is currently having to endure, it’s not surprising that the character is now holding on to what appears to be false hope in The Flash season 8. Rather than the story result in Frost’s miraculous resurrection and an emotional return to Team Flash, there’s a much greater chance of it culminating in a crushing realization for Caitlin that can set up her season 9 story.
