The Flash star Grant Gustin teased a big twist to come in the upcoming second episode of season 8, which is part of the Arrowverse crossover special, "Armageddon," a five-episode event on The CW. As the DC Comics speedster Barry Allen, Gustin has taken the lead in being a focal point of the network's Arrowverse. The Arrowverse is a term that refers to the shared universe in which multiple CW heroes exist, allowing for special crossover events. It began with the Stephen Amell-led series, Arrow, based on the Green Arrow. Series such as The Flash, Supergirl, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and Black Lightning subsequently joined.

Gustin debuted as Allen in The Flash in October of 2014. Based on the DC Comic hero created by Gardner Fox and Harry Lampert, the series follows a young forensic scientist who has dedicated his life to proving his father innocent for the murder of his mother. After a freak accident imbues Barry with the power to travel at the speed of light, he becomes The Flash, a hero for the citizens of Central City. Now, with his alter ego only known to a select few, Barry splits his time between manifesting his powers at STAR Labs, working his job at the local precinct, and finding a way to get his father out of prison.

Premiering its eighth season this week, The Flash has kicked off "Armageddon," the crossover event in which Barry is allegedly destined to destroy the world by the year 2031. In a TV Line interview, Gustin spoke on the twists and turns that are yet to come in episode two of the five-episode arc. Read what Gustin said below:

Gustin: ‘There’s a turn, and that is why Barry goes to the Hall of Justice and seeks out Jefferson [Pierce]. He needs help with something that I won’t spoil, because it’s a big twist that kind of sets the rest of the five-parter into motion. But by the end of the second episode, there is a development that makes Barry think that maybe [The Flash causing Armageddon] is possible.”

The premiere episode found Allen and the gang venturing onto new paths following the season seven finale. While Barry is testing out his enhanced abilities, his wife Iris West, played by Candice Patton, is growing her editor hat as the leader of Central City Media. The couple plans to revisit having a baby when they receive an unexpected houseguest in The Atom, aka Brandon Routh's Ray Palmer. While West and Palmer attend a tech convention, an alien named Despero arrives, Terminator-style, seeking to eliminate Barry as it has been predicted The Flash will bring upon the destruction of the Earth.

While Barry may seem doubtful about this fate, he cannot totally dismiss these claims. The Flash's ability to align his powers with The Speed Force in the past has had drier consequences for both present and future worlds. Barry's abilities allow him to not only travel at inhuman speeds but eventually travel through time. The hero can even affect different dimensions, causing irreversible damage to several realities. The possibility that his power could bring on an apocalyptic event is very much possible. Ironically, it also deems Barry and his team the only people able to prevent any event of that magnitude from happening.
