The Flash season 7 will see the return of fan-favorite villains. Premiering on The CW in 2014 and starring Grant Gustin as “the scarlet speedster,” Barry Allen, The Flash is currently the longest-running show on the network. With Arrow’s series finale back in January 2020, Flash also became the senior show in the "Arrowverse," the shared television universe of DC comics properties including DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Black Lightning, and Batwoman.

When season 6 left off, Iris West (Candice Patton) was still trapped in the Mirrorverse. The arch-villain Eva McCulloch (Efrat Dor), aka Mirror Master, had resumed control of her company, McCulloch Tech, and killed her husband. With the destruction of the Speedforce as a result of the Crisis crossover mega-event, Barry was losing his powers, and Caitlin Snow, aka Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker), left the team to undergo treatment for injuries sustained in her battle with Dr. Light. Team Flash was at its collective weakest, and Mirror Master essentially declared victory, leaving no telling what would then befall a defenseless Central City in season 7.

Danielle Nicolet, who plays The Flash’s Cecile Horton (former D.A. and current wife of Joe West), revealed at the virtual Comic-Con Experience São Paulo that some fan-favorite foes could be rearing their ugly heads this coming season. Nicolet didn’t want to spoil too much, but she had the following to offer to get fans buzzing:

“You know we’re not allowed to tell you secrets about the season. But I will say I think it’s a reasonable assumption that, yeah we always have time travel, on some level, happening. I mean, I can tell you this, there are going to be some favorites from the past, some bad guys favorites that may be paying a visit or two this season so I’ll leave it up to you to speculate on how they’re going to get to us.”

The Flash has a long track record when it comes to time travel, dating back to its first season. Over the years, the mechanic has allowed Barry to revisit past nemeses like Zoom and Savitar. Still, even without timeline hopping, many bad guys have returned, although not always for a fight. Season 6 alone found Barry Allen making amends with Gorilla Grodd and Pied Piper, and Leonard Snart, aka Captain Cold, played by Wentworth Miller (Prison Break), is a fan-favorite who has come back on multiple occasions to aid The Flash. With the show’s history as an indicator, Nicolet’s tease is a sure-fire guarantee, leaving only then the question of which villain is returning and in what capacity.

Eobard Thawne, The Reverse-Flash, is always a safe bet. Thawne has been a thorn in Flash’s side since day one, and despite countless defeats, he consistently finds new ways to make trouble. Bloodwork, played by Sendhil Ramamurthy (Heroes), is a more recent villain and a strong contender to resurface. Terrorizing Team Flash for the first half of season 6, he last appeared in episode 17, “Liberation.” Bloodwork has already aided Mirror Master once and may choose to do so again in season 7.

We’ve also seen villains from different corners of the Arrowverse jump shows. It may be time for a fan-favorite like Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough), who has spent considerable time on Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, to take up a full-time residence in Central City. “Magic” has been only a minimally explored element in The Flash over the years, so the return of a character like Darhk could be an exciting change of pace. Regardless of which former baddies decide to drop by, Team Flash is sure to have their hands full when they’re finally off and running again. Season 7 debuts February 23rd, 2021.
