The casting of a new villain in The Flash reveals how the show is replacing the Arrowverse’s Captain Cold. Played by Wentworth Miller, Captain Cold - aka Leonard Snart - was a member of both the Rogues and the Legends in the Arrowverse.

Captain Cold, known for his use of a gun that fires blasts of cold energy, started out as a recurring foe -- and occasional ally -- of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) in The Flash seasons 1 and 2. He, along with Heatwave (Dominic Purcell), was later moved to Legends of Tomorrow, where they became founding members of the team. Despite his popularity, Captain Cold’s Arrowverse story ended in the season 1 finale with the character gaining redemption. Though he died, time travel, flashbacks, and alternate universes have allowed the Arrowverse to bring him back in episodes of both Legends of Tomorrow and The Flash, with his final appearances occurring during the “Crisis on Earth-X” crossover.

Casting details for The Flash season 7 indicate that instead of looking for a way to resurrect him post-Crisis, the Arrowverse will move toward having a new Captain Cold in the form of Chillblaine. It was recently reported that Shadowhunters actor Jon Corr will play Mark Stevens aka Chillblaine in a recurring capacity. Chillblaine is a name used by a number of villains in DC Comics, all of which are connected to Golden Glider, Leonard Snart’s sister, who equipped them with the cold guns designed by her brother. According to the description attributed to the Arrowverse’s take on Chillblaine, he’s “a charismatic bad boy obsessed with cryogenic technology”. It’s also said that he possesses “irresistible charm and roguish style” - not to mention some freeze guns that he'll no doubt get his hands on.

Chillblaine’s personality traits and skillset sound quite reminiscent of Leonard Snart, and it seems decidedly unlikely that their similarities are a coincidence. Though this character may be using his own codename, it does sound like his legacy is linked in some way to the legacy of Wentworth Miller’s Captain Cold, who has yet to have a successor.

That connection could come through the Arrowverse’s Golden Glider (Peyton List), who hasn’t been seen since The Flash season 2. It’s been said that The Flash is bringing back several old villains in season 7, and she could very well be one of them. If so, Chillblaine could follow in the footsteps of his comic book counterparts and become a minion or partner to Golden Glider, who could somehow set him up with weapons like her brother’s. If Chillblaine is anything like Captain Cold, he could be a fun antagonist for Barry Allen in The Flash season 7. In the show’s first season, Snart became one of the first villains to figure out the Scarlet Speedster’s secret identity, and that played a big part in the challenge he posed to the team - so it’ll be interesting to see if Jon Corr’s Chillblaine can be just as dangerous.
