The Flash season 7 is officially introducing Bart Allen a.k.a. Impulse into the Arrowverse as one of the remaining big speedsters from the comics. Ever since The Flash premiered in 2014, the show hasn't shied away from utilizing the source material as much as possible every season. Pretty much all of the big villains from Barry Allen's villain gallery have been introduced at this point, whether it's the speedster villains or the Rogues. When it comes to the larger Flash Family, the Arrowverse drama has also been good at bringing most of them in throughout its seven seasons.

In some cases, characters like Wally West and Jesse Quick were slightly reimagined, specifically regarding their family lineage, while still becoming their heroic counterparts. Jay Garrick came in with a twist during The Flash season 2, as Teddy Sears was never the Golden Age Flash and, instead, it was John Wesley Shipp who ended up playing him. The Flash has even explored Iris West and Barry's legacy with the introduction of their future daughter, Nora West-Allen, a new take on Dawn Allen from the comics. However, one popular speedster that hasn't been introduced is Bart Allen, or better known to the world as Impulse.

But The Flash season 7 is going to change that as Impulse is officially set to make his Arrowverse debut in 2021. Jordan Fisher has been cast to bring the character to life, who hasn't been seen in live-action since Kyle Gallner portrayed Bart in Smallville for a handful of episodes. But The CW incarnation of him will be significantly different.

Bart Allen's Origins & Powers In DC Comics Explained

Bart Allen The Flash

Bart Allen is one of the most recognizable heroes in the Flash Family and has even taken on the title himself after Barry, Wally, and Jay. The mythology depicts Bart as being the son of Don Allen (Iris and Barry's son) and Meloni Thawne, who is connected to Eobard Thawne a.k.a. the Reverse-Flash. By being Don's kid, that makes Bart the grandson of Iris and Barry but comes from the 30th century. In most stories, Bart gets sent into the past where he gets to know his grandparents at a younger age while also fighting alongside his other Flash Family members. Bart has both operated as Impulse while also taken on the mantles of Kid Flash as well as Flash. When the New 52 began, they introduced a character that was meant to be Bart Allen but ended up not being the real one as his real name was Bar Torr.

The real Impulse got reintroduced in DC Rebirth's Flash War after the Force Barrier had been broken, which released Bart from his prison. With Impulse being a speedster like the others, Bart has most of the same abilities as his family members. However, Bart does have a few tricks of his own, one of which is the ability to create Speed Force Scouts. They act as avatars of himself and he can send them into the past or future on his behalf. Whatever memories and experiences they go through, Bart is able to absorb them. Whenever Bart creates Speed Force Scouts, however, he's taking a risk, because if one dies, it can affect his health; he was even put into a coma at one point.

Jordan Fisher Plays Bart Allen In The Flash

For the Arrowverse's incarnation of Impulse, The Flash cast Jordan Fisher as Bart Allen, who will be a recurring guest star. In the announcement, it was stated that Bart will make his first appearance in episode 17, which is also The Flash's 150th installment. While not a direct parallel, when the show celebrated its 100th episode, it was a story that also focused on Barry working with his other future child, Nora. Impulse will become Fisher's first superhero role, as the actor has a long body of work that includes starring in Broadway's HamiltonShe-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and Archibald's Next Big Thing.

Fisher has also worked in films like Netflix's To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You featuring Noah Centineo who is also about to become a DC superhero as Atom-Smasher in Black Adam. With Fisher having a background in musicals and theater, that fits the Arrowverse perfectly, since many The Flash cast members, including Grant Gustin, do as well. When Fisher isn't working on TV shows or movies, he's also an active singer as well as a gamer.

How The Flash Is Changing Bart Allen

Jordan Fisher Cast As Bart Allen On The Flash Season 7

While Bart will still come from the future, according to The CW, The Flash is making a huge change to his family lineage. Instead of being Iris and Barry's grandson, Fisher's version of Impulse will be their actual son. While it hasn't been specified (yet) what year Bart comes from, he's still coming from the future like in the comics. Bart likely won't be from the 30th century, due to the fact that Don and Meloni aren't his parents anymore. However, Abra Kadabra did allude to Barry one day becoming obsessed with the future. That could be setting up the possibility that Barry and Iris travel to the future in their later years and give birth to Bart. But that remains to be seen for now, as it's still doable that Bart is from 20-something years in the future.

This wouldn't be the first time that The Flash has altered the family dynamic from the comics. In DC mythos, Wally was actually Iris' nephew, while the Arrowverse made him her brother. Originally, Jesse Quick was the daughter of the Justice Society heroes Liberty Belle and Johnny Quick, while in the Arrowverse, she's the daughter of Harrison "Harry" Wells. So it's not like they haven't done this before when bringing in these iconic speedsters on The Flash.

Bart Allen's Role In The Flash Season 7

Bart Allen Kid Flash from the comics

The Flash's official description teases Bart Allen as the fastest teenager alive, but that he has a tendency of being impulsive. This will give Iris and Barry not only a surprise of yet another future child but getting their plates full as they help navigate their speedster son. Part of their story with Bart is teaching him the importance of patience, which is something Impulse will have to master. While never stating who the coming opponent is, The CW hints that Bart will become imperative to help Team Flash face their biggest threat yet. Even though it could be anyone, there's the chance it's the real Godspeed, who has been confirmed to finally appear in The Flash season 7.

It's unclear at the moment how many episodes The Flash season 7 will consist of given the global pandemic, but since Bart is making his debut in episode 17, that story is towards the end of the season. That would leave Impulse with only a handful of episodes to appear in before the season is over. However, given how early the big announcement came, it wouldn't be shocking if Bart actually makes it into The Flash season 8, which has already been renewed by The CW. Those first episodes of Impulse's appearance might be the setup of a larger arc that will happen next year.

With The Flash introducing Bart Allen into the Arrowverse, that rounds out the Flash Family from the comics. At this point, it would be great if the creators brought all of them together in The Flash season 8 or beyond. This is the first time any live-action property has introduced Barry, Jay, Wally, Jesse, Nora, and Bart in the same universe. It might be trickier this year due to the global pandemic, but it would be fun and a huge celebration of Flash's legacy if they could unite all the speedsters for one episode in the future.
