It's been revealed that Game of Thrones actor Miltos Yerolemou was once in the running to play the mysterious big bad in season 4 of The Flash. The two shows certainly don't share a universe (although with the Arrowverse version of the Multiverse, who can say for sure?), but the information does shed some more light on the supervillain that Barry Allen will face in the upcoming series.

So far we've only had the merest hints of what to expect in future episodes of The Flash. The season 3 finale ended with Barry defeating his evil future self (Savitar), but having to voluntarily imprison himself in the speed force to protect his world from its unstable breaches. Of course we know that the Scarlet Speedster will return from his purgatory stay, and it's already been confirmed that Wally West will not be the "New Flash." But with the previous three seasons all seeing Barry facing off against evil speedsters, fans of the series were wondering what form his next nemesis would take. The identity of this season 4 villain seemed to be confirmed by producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, and hinted at when the name "Devoe" was dropped in two key episodes. Not yet seen in the show, this would refer to Clifford Devoe otherwise known as The Thinker, who used his mental prowess to attempt to thwart the hero in DC comics on many occasions.

While still to be officially confirmed, extra evidence for this theory has been reported by ComicBook.com, who have passed on some information taken from the Nashville Game of Thrones convention. Actor Miltos Yerolemou, who played sword master Syrio Forel in the first season of the show, revealed that he had auditioned for a part in The Flash. The actor said he "read to be The Flash's next 'Big Bad' and the tagline was something along of the lines of 'The Fastest Man Alive vs. The Fastest Brain Alive.'"

However, Yerolemou also admitted that he didn't feel he was right for the role and that it wasn't to be. Interestingly, during the audition he was given "three pages of random Roman trivia to memorize and spit back out." He added, "Apparently this new 'Big Bad' is a fast talker. Really smart."

This all fits perfectly with the portrayal of The Thinker as he's depicted in the comics. Starting out as a small-time crook, Devoe realised that he would be better suited as the mastermind behind heists. When he adopted the mantle of The Thinker, he used scientific devices to fight The Flash, including a "Thinking Cap", which could project a devastating mental force and make Barry's super-speed useless. The Thinker would use this device repeatedly over the years, and it's sure to make an appearance if he is the big bad in season 4.

The fact that the audition for the character reportedly contains a bona-fide mental test seems to suggest that Berlanti and Kreisberg are taking the portrayal of the character seriously to an extent. It will be fascinating to finally learn who's got the role and just how important Devoe will be to the overall arc of the upcoming episodes. It's not like the showrunners haven't pulled the rug from under viewers before, so it's best to be cautious until all is revealed.
