Since The Flash was spun off from The CW's flagship DC Comics series, Arrow, the show has offered hints that it would eventually adapt the limited series comic book run Flashpoint, written by Geoff Johns and drawn by Andy Kubert. Certainly, given The Flash's season 1 focus on Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) still reconciling the death of his mother, it seemed inevitable. But, it wasn't until the season 2 finale that it was seemingly confirmed.
The season finale episode of The Flash season 2 saw Barry finally defeat Zoom with the help of his friends, the Speed Force, and some Time Wraiths. But, it was the final moments - in which Barry, still grieving for his father, decided to go back in time to save his mother once and for all - that seemed to set up Flashpoint, which centers on an alternate universe created when Barry Allen goes back in time to save his mother. More recently, Gustin confirmed the season 3 premiere episode will be titled 'Flashpoint' and now a new trailer for The Flash's return teases what exactly this alternate universe will look like.
During The Flash panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego, a video (above) was screened that recaps those final moments of the season 2 finale, then offers viewers a look at what's to come. Some of the biggest notable differences in Barry's alternate universe are the fact that his parents are still alive, both Joe (Jesse L. Martin) and Iris West (Candice Patton) no longer know who he is, Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) is the founder of Ramon Industries, and Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale) appears as Kid Flash.
Furthermore, Matt Letscher's Reverse-Flash also appears and name drops "Flashpoint" - likely to the delight of many DC Comics fans. In addition to the major changes in store for Barry, the season 3 trailer also teases the arrival of Dr. Alchemy, who was confirmed to be one of two big bads by The Flash SDCC panel this year along with an unnamed speedster - though set photos may have offered fans a tease of who that evil speedster could be.
Then, the final sequence of glimpses take a look back at many events that have occurred over the course of the first two seasons of The Flash - some of which have to do with characters who have since joined Legends of Tomorrow as well as the Jay Garrick Flash. Considering the announcement that Reverse-Flash will be joining Legends of Tomorrow in the show's second season and it will be dealing with the Justice Society of America, this trailer for The Flash may be hinting at Flashpoint affecting The CW's spinoff series.
That said, it remains to be seen how Flashpoint will affect the other CW shows and how long the storyline will last within The Flash's third season. But, this new trailer for season 3 certainly offers plenty for fans to look forward to - and let's not forget that big DC Comics CW crossover heading our way.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5th, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10th, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13th.
