The Flash is making waves as the series deepens its roster for the upcoming third season. Flashpoint will be a major event, but series lead Grant Gustin has already clarified that it won't take up as much time as fans would assume. Large-scale events like Flashpoint or the 4-show massive crossover mean that this Arrowverse is bigger and more connected than imaginable.
Legends of Tomorrow will introduce both the Justice Society of America and the Legion of Doom for their second season, and fans are sure to find connections to these characters across all four shows. The Flash has introduced several new characters from Barry Allen's Rogues Gallery including another evil speedster (not Zoom) and fans are finally getting that musical episode (including Supergirl) they've dreamed of.
The addition of Mirror Master/Sam Scudder (Grey Damon) presents a unique opportunity to tell this villain's backstory - and in so doing, fans will be treated to the return of Wentworth Miller as Leonard Snart/Captain Cold. We've expected his return in some capacity given the lucrative contract he signed earlier this year that allows him to be a series regular across the CW's slate of DCTV shows. E! spoke to The Flash executive producers Todd and Aaron Helbing, who noted that Miller makes his return to The Flash in episode 304. Of the return, Aaron and Todd had this to say:
"We're excited to have Wentworth back because he always brings this amazing presence. It's the origin story of [Mirror Master], but it's this struggle between Mirror Master and Captain Cold and you get to see who comes out on top."
Based on the casting notice for the role of Mirror Master, he's one of the greatest thieves Central City has ever known, and after a three year hiatus, he's back for revenge. Does that mean we'll see, either via flashback or on Earth-2, that Snart, Mick, and Scudder were all part of the same team? In the context of The Flash series, Leonard and Mick have always considered themselves the best thieves in town. There had to have been a falling out between them due to Scudder's ego which producers compared to the Grand Canyon.
The note about his "mysterious disappearance three years ago" suggests that Scudder may have been affected by the Particle Accelerator, and has been taking his time away to hone his new metahuman abilities to move through reflective surfaces. Given Mick and Leonard's reliance on specialized weapons and not metahuman abilities, it feels like the Captain Cold/Mirror Master showdown will turn out a bit differently if we see them in present day.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5th, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10th, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13th.
