The Flash will bring Supergirl to the DC Extended Universe, and leaked photos and videos from the set have given fans a first look at her costume – and here’s how it compares to that of Henry Cavill’s Superman. The DCEU has had an interesting history so far with both successes and failures, though the latter have left a bigger mark. This universe began in 2013 with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, which introduced Henry Cavill as the new Clark Kent/Superman and set the tone for subsequent movies.

The DCEU did its best to keep its characters grounded but with a touch of darkness, in an effort to set it aside from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Justice League, Warner Bros. learned this wasn’t the best approach. The DCEU has since been in a phase of change and reinvention, with previously introduced characters getting their own adventures (like Harley Quinn did in Birds of Prey) and new characters set to arrive soon, such as Black Adam. The DCEU also announced its part of a multiverse that includes both past movies and TV shows, and the first movie to explore this will be The Flash, bringing together Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen, Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck’s versions of Batman, and a new Supergirl played by Sasha Calle.

The Flash will reportedly see Barry Allen traveling back in time to save his mother, but his actions will bring unintentional consequences to his timeline, and things won’t be the same once he returns, making way for the appearance of alternate versions of Batman and a new Supergirl. The Kryptonian hero recently starred in her own TV show (played by Melissa Benoist), but instead of bringing her to the movie side of the DCEU, the studio went for a different version and cast Sasha Calle instead. Now, although Warner hasn’t released any official images from The Flash, set photos and videos have already leaked, and among those are some that show Supergirl’s brand new costume, which is very similar to that of Cavill’s Superman, though with some slight differences.

Henry Cavill as Superman stands on a Smallville street

Supergirl is best known for wearing a female version of Superman’s suit: same color palette, same symbol on the chest, but instead of pants and “underwear” over it, Supergirl wears either a skirt, short shorts, or a leotard, always showing off her legs. The Flash’s Supergirl is very different from all those, as she was given a full, one-piece costume like that of Superman. Both Calle’s Supergirl suit and Cavill’s Superman one have subtle lines from below the ribs going down and, of course, the symbol on the chest is pretty much the same design, but Supergirl’s suit has a higher neck (either intentionally or to be modified in post-production to blend with the cape) and the upper part is red, while Superman's is all blue. Supergirl’s suit is also lacking the details on the “belt” that Cavill’s Superman had, with subtle references to their “S” symbol, and the texture, while similar, looks a bit softer in Supergirl’s costume, though that could also change with the lights, filters, and more.

The similarities between both costumes, which fans were quick to point out, could be hinting at Supergirl and Superman crossing paths thanks to the timeline chaos Barry Allen will bring (supposing Cavill continues to play Superman), but their differences could also point at Supergirl being the one who escapes Krypton in this new reality, thus taking Superman’s place in the future of the DCEU. What’s for sure, however, is that those set photos are just giving a small taste of what Supergirl will look like in The Flash, as superhero costumes go through a lot of improvements in post-production to make them look as they should and add more details, most notably the cape.
