According to Ray Fisher, The Flash movie has always had Cyborg as a character through its various iterations over the years. The Scarlet Speedster solo film has been in the works since the early 2010s and Warner Bros. finally confirmed this in 2014 with the studio aiming for a 2018 release date. Phil Lord and Chris Miller wrote the original treatment for the film, but the pair declined to direct the film. WB brought on Seth Grahame-Smith to then write and direct the film, but he proceeded to drop out due to creative differences.
Dope director Rick Famuyiwa was then attached to direct, but, like Grahame-Smith, left the project over creative differences. Behind the scenes drama at DC Films also seemed to stall the project, but it's finally getting off the ground this year with Andy Muschietti (It) attached to direct. Alongside Miller, various heroes from the DCEU were reported to have roles, including, at one point, Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman and Ray Fisher's Cyborg. Fisher was dropped from the film after he publicly denounced WB for their handling of the production of Justice League, but his latest comments indicate that this latest iteration of The Flash has gone through more recent rewrites.
Fisher told LightCast Podcast that, through its various iterations, The Flash always included Cyborg in its plot. Fisher cites Famuyiwa as one of the directors who was keen on having his character in the film as a way to explore Cyborg's character more thoroughly alongside the Flash. Fisher even says that he spoke with Muschietti as recently as last year about Cyborg's role in the film.
As far as I’m aware, there’s never been a version of The Flash film that did not have Cyborg present in it. And for Rick’s part, I think his specific perspective would be great for Cyborg to really explore and for us to explore Cyborg’s solo film. Not just from the action side, because his stories actually have a lot of heart and they have a lot of meaning.
I will say that I had a great conversation with Andy Muschietti last year. The script as it stood and the things that we talked about at that time seemed really awesome. I wish them the best.
Fisher's outspokenness about his treatment at the hands of both Joss Whedon and Warner Bros. seemingly led to his being removed from the film, with reports circulating earlier this year that Fisher had been dropped from The Flash. Fisher confirmed the accuracy of these reports and subsequently ignited speculation about his character's future in the DCEU. While it remains unclear as to whether or not Fisher will be reprising his role in future projects, the actor has said that he does not wish to work on any films under the guidance of DC Films current president Walter Hamada.
Fisher confirming that he talked with Muschietti as recently as last year indicates that The Flash film likely underwent another round of rewrites in the last few months. Fans have rallied behind the actor in support of his standing up against the studio and the revival of his character's plot in Zack Snyder's Justice League sparked hopes that his character could return. While that's unlikely to happen in The Flash, fans keep pushing for WB to restore the SnyderVerse and Fisher has indicated a willingness to work with Snyder on a DCEU project, leaving the door open for his return.
