[WARNING: This article contains Major SPOILERS for The Flash and Arrow]
There was little doubt that The CW was pulling all the stops for their first season of The Flash, but the latest batch of set photos - possibly from the show's final episodes - show even bigger things lie in store; things that until now, have been kept a total secret. And in hindsight, the appearance of the Reverse-Flash AND an Arrow crossover in the first half of the season was just the tip of the network's shared universe potential.
Typically we would treat all set photos as spoiler-heavy, with the context and explanation for the action left somewhat to the imagination. But in this case, the images contain not only spoilers of some Flash finale events, but potential storylines for Arrow hero Oliver Queen as well.
Make no mistake: SPOILERS lie ahead. You have been warned.
The set photos come courtesy of Grant Gustin News, revealing that not only will the Reverse-Flash reveal himself to Barry as Dr. Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh), but that he'll also fill two of the other resident CW superheroes in on the fact as well. After an incredibly successful Flash/Arrow crossover, it seems that the network will bring the two heroes together to give The Flash a proper send-off to its debut season.
The sizzle reel shown at this year's PaleyFest confirmed that Detective Joe West and Captain Quentin Lance would be working together, and the new photos show even bigger things are in store for the DC Comics superheroes.
After Wells revealed himself to be the time traveller Eobard Thawne, and the most recent episode of The Flash saw Barry finally realizing that there was something sinister below the scientist's surface, it seemed only a matter of time until Barry learned the whole truth. How he handles it remains to be seen.
However, the fact that Oliver is wearing the garb of the League of Assassins could spell just as much for his own story leading up to the finales. After being offered the chance to become the new Ra's al Ghul, and command the League's forces in whatever way he saw fit (oh, also, live for another century), Oliver chose to turn it down. As he soon learned, offers from Ra's al Ghul aren't the kind that can be refused.
Having already earned one new costume this season, courtesy of S.T.A.R. Labs' seamstress Cisco Ramon, it's hard to know just how much to put into Oliver's outfit. Could a job with the League be the series overhaul that star Stephen Amell has been referring to for Arrow season 4? Or is it merely a disguise he uses when meeting up with Barry?
In addition to The CW's two leading heroes, the photos also confirm a return from Ronnie Raymond a.k.a. Firestorm (Robbie Amell). Amell had previously teased that he may one day share the screen with his actor cousin, later adding that a major event would bring his superpowered character back to The Flash. We were surprised to see the character leave Central City just as he finally reached his peak, but a top-secret crossover event to potentially conclude both shows' seasons seems a fitting place for him to return.
Given Robbie Amell's absence from the planned Flash/Arrow spinoff series - while his other half, Victor Garber is confirmed to be in the cast - any appearance of the nuclear hero offers the chance for an explanation. But if the network or writers have any fate in store for Raymond/Firestorm, we wouldn't expect it to leak out any time soon.
Even so, the episode being filmed in these images could carry serious implications for all three heroes - and one villain - featured within it. We're not sure how effective Oliver may be in a fight against two speedsters and a human flamethrower, but as the photos show, he just might have some backup...
What do you make of the new set photos? Are you happy to see that The CW is making a habit of their Flash/Arrow crossovers? Or do the possible twists for the character involved have you wishing it wasnt' so? Sound off in the comments.
The Flash airs Tuesdays @8pm on The CW.
