Barry appears in court in a brand new midseason premiere trailer for The Flash. After a monumental weekend of fighting his villainous alter-ego in this year’s Arrowverse crossover, “Crisis on Earth-X” and finally tying the knot with Iris, Barry finds himself in a more serious and personal problem than battling aliens and safeguarding humanity. This time, he is all by himself, fighting off murder charges after being successfully framed by this year’s big bad, Clifford DeVoe, also known as the Thinker (Neil Sandilands).
Things were looking up during last night’s midseason finale titled “Don’t Run” after Barry was finally able to escape DeVoe’s sanctuary. Little did he know that a bigger problem is coming: just when everybody has finally gotten into the festive mood at Joe’s apartment, Barry and Iris’ apartment goes off prompting the former to blitz his way back to his house to find out what the commotion was about. There, he is greeted with DeVoe’s old lifeless body stabbed with the knife missing from the set previously received as a wedding present. Unfortunately, before everything sinks in, police officers make their way into the unit and arrest Barry for a crime he did not commit.
It would take a few weeks for us to find out where all this leads, but a freshly released trailer for The Flash‘s midseason premiere confirms our worst nightmare — Barry is going to jail, and unless he finds a way to prove his innocence, he might stay there for a long time. The 30-second clip posted on YouTube (which you can watch above) features our hero appearing on the court as the prosecution makes his case in front of the jury. We can also hear Barry introducing himself as an “innocent man,” during the initial questioning. “I’m being framed for something that I didn’t do” he adds, but it’s difficult to believe his case especially with the compromising position the police found him. His lawyer then offers him a way out: admit to the world that he is the Flash, but as they say, that’s easier said than done.
By outing himself, he lets go of his anonymity, meaning that he will be forced to carry out his superhero duties as the Flash even when he no longers wants do it, Barry says this himself. This is a very tricky situation, especially now that he is a married man and could soon be a father if he and Iris are planning start a family. We expect that once there are kids involved, he would not be as enthusiastic about his dangerous side job given that he has to also consider his kid’s safety. Publicly declaring his secret identity ties him down to the responsibility of being Central City’s local crime-fighter.
Despite a huge chunk of DeVoe’s evil plan unveiled during the midseason finale, we still don’t know what his end game is. It is clear, however, that he and his wife, the Mechanic, have their eyes on Barry and it seems like they want him locked up for some reason. A couple of episodes ago, they even filed a complaint against him with the CCPD for harassment after Barry started sticking his nose on their business. Obviously, that was not enough grounds for the Flash to be sent behind bars, but this current case seems pretty legitimate.
The Flash returns @8pm on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.
