When Barry Allen was first introduced on Arrow, immediate comparisons were drawn between him and Oliver Queen. Barry was sunny, upbeat, and cheerful -- Ollie's total opposite. So when Barry became The Flash, he was a very different hero than The Hood or The Arrow. But for someone who smiled so much, Barry's life has had a lot of sadness. He saw his mother murdered and father falsely imprisoned for it when he was just a child. Two of his mentors have betrayed him, and both are responsible for the death of his parents. Yet somehow, he managed to remain the same happy guy he was when first introduced.
In season 3, suddenly Barry was smiling a whole lot less. After a few months living in Flashpoint, he returned to his timeline to discover that his actions had massive consequences. He nearly ruined his friendship with Cisco, and Caitlin might turn into a villain at any moment. Then a trip to the future where he witnessed Iris die turned Barry far more serious and solemn than the audience has ever seen before.
And in the upcoming episode 'Abra Kadabra' Barry's troubles continue. At least according to the official synopsis:
"The Flash (Grant Gustin) battles Abra Kadabra (guest star David Dastmalchian), a villain from Earth-19, who makes him a tempting offer – release him and Abra Kadara will reveal Savitar’s true identity. Desperate to save Iris (Candice Patton), Barry considers taking the deal but Gypsy (guest star Jessica Camacho) breaches in to capture the villain for her own reasons and during the melee, Abra Kadabra manages to escape. Barry is furious that Gypsy interfered but Gypsy refuses to back down, forcing Cisco (Carlos Valdes) to take sides. Meanwhile, Julian (Tom Felton) is still a bit cold towards Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) but when she is severely injured in a battle with Gypsy, he rushes to her side."
David Dastmalchian is no stranger to comic book entertainment, he's appeared in The Dark Knight, Ant-Man, and two episodes of Gotham. Now he's playing Abra Kadabra, a classic villain from The Flash comics. In the books he's a magician from the future who travels back in time and uses future technology to become a thief. It sounds like he's not from the future this time, but the same Earth-19 as Gypsy and H.R. Whether he has the same personality as he does in the books remains to be seen.
Gypsy also returns in this episode, and it sounds like she and Barry will be forcing Cisco to choose between them. Considering Cisco and Barry's recent stormy history, it's not automatically clear whose side he will be on. Cisco isn't always the most clear-headed when it comes to love -- he did fall for Lisa Snart after all -- so now that he knows Gypsy also has feelings for him, he might turn against Barry in this battle.
The Flash returns to the CW with ‘Into the Speed Force’ on Tuesday, March 14 at 8 pm.
