Based on the beloved horror video game of the same name, the film revolves around a security guard who takes a night-time job at the eponymous family entertainment center where the four animatronic mascots, possessed by the spirits of murdered children, are believed to have killed those who stay after midnight. Though its recent conclusion of filming may leave some wondering how the Five Nights at Freddy's movie trailer could be ready, let alone leak online, the strong anticipation for the film throughout its development would likely make Blumhouse eager to begin the marketing as soon as possible. Cawthon, who is also co-writing and producing the adaptation, and studio head Jason Blum have both frequently shared updates throughout its development and production, clearly understanding the value the property has.
Some expected the first Five Nights at Freddy's movie trailer to premiere at this year's CinemaCon, where distributor Universal Pictures were showing footage from their 2023 slate of releases, though it didn't prove to be the case. With the horror film slated for an October release in both theaters and on Peacock, it would make sense for the first proper looks to begin rolling out to audiences, especially in a summer in which Blumhouse is releasing the similarly anticipated Insidious: The Red Door.
However, while the plan may have initially been to release the first Five Nights at Freddy's trailer with the Patrick Wilson-helmed sequel, it seems more likely now that the leak will result in an earlier arrival, something audiences are unlikely to mind given their excitement for the adaptation.Other studios have remained firm in keeping to their trailer release plans in the wake of leaks, though, making it possible Blumhouse ultimately does the same.
