In the moving trailer for Five Feet Apart, Cole Sprouse and Haley Lu Richardson grow closer while Cystic Fibrosis keeps them physically apart. Directed by Justin Baldoni, Five Feet Apart’s premise is simple yet complex, as Will (Sprouse) and Stella (Richardson) both live with CF, a genetic disorder, and attempt to find common ground, and perhaps love.

While older moviegoers may remember Sprouse as one of Adam Sandler’s twin sons in Big Daddy (1999), younger audiences likely know him as Riverdale’s Jughead Jones. Sprouse hasn't appeared in a feature film since 2010’s Kung Fu Magoo, but his co-star, Richardson, has recently appeared in high profile films like Kelly Fremon Craig’s coming-of-age comedy The Edge of Seventeen (2016), M. Night Shyamalan’s psychological horror Split (2018), and Chris Weitz’s historical drama Operation Finale (2018). Alongside Sprouse and Richardson, Moisés Arias (Pitch Perfect 3) and Kimberly Hébert Gregory (Vice Principals) have supporting roles.

Today, CBS Films released Five Feet Apart’s trailer, in which the concept of human touch immediately establishes the narrative premise. During a monologue, Richardson’s Stella details what she's lost (and gained) due to CF, which precedes an exploration of her day-to-day routine. Watch the trailer and see the film's poster below.

The clip further establishes important details of Stella’s condition through the character's social media video commentaries, most notably that people with CF shouldn’t get within six feet of each other, in order to avoid bacterial infections. Enter Sprouse’s Will, who immediately makes an impression upon Stella, thus creating another layer of conflict as they attempt to understand each other’s firm beliefs on CF and life ideals. In the trailer’s second half, it's revealed that Stella mostly keeps to herself, which makes her interest in Will so compelling and challenging. While the selling point is obviously the emotional drama, the trailer also accentuates situational humor, complementing the six-foot boundary premise.

When viewing the Five Feet Apart trailer, many viewers will likely think of Josh Boone’s 2014 drama The Fault in Our Stars (starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort) or Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s 2015 film Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (starring Olivia Cooke and Jon Bernthal). But while those films feature characters with thyroid cancer and leukemia, Five Feet Apart is unique for its examination of CF, and how those living with the genetic disorder live from day to day. In 2012, Baldoni created My Last Days, reportedly the most-watched digital documentary series ever released. For Five Feet Apart, he teamed up with screenwriter Tobias Iaconis, who also wrote the upcoming horror The Curse of La Llorona starring Linda Cardellini (Bloodline, Hunter Killer).

Based on the trailer, Baldoni's film will undoubtedly be a tearjerker, and hopefully it will help spread awareness about Cystic Fibrosis.
