First Trailer For Martin Scorsese's 'Shutter Island'

The first trailer for Martin Scorsese's upcoming film, Shutter Island, has been released by Paramount Pictures. Screen Rant has reported on a couple of Shutter Island posters over the past few months, but today we get our first look at the movie.

Adapted from the novel by Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone), Shutter Island is set in 1954 and tells the story of a U.S. Marshall and his new partner who are sent to investigate the escape of a female prisoner from a prison for the criminally insane. The girl is presumed to be hiding out on the remote Shutter Island where the prison is located.

Now that you know the plot, check out the effectively creepy trailer, but be warned: The trailer seems to give an awful lot of the story away, maybe too much:

Personally, I think this first trailer for Shutter Island gives away just a bit too much of the plot - a problem that many trailers for this type of movie have.  That issue aside, I think the trailer looks rather good. I must admit I wasn't absolutely blown away by it - there was no hanging on every word and action as I had hoped - but nonetheless I liked the creepy tone, the elegant cinematography showing off the grubbiness of the prison, what looks like stellar acting from DiCaprio in particular (does he ever give any less?) and flashes of real tension from a well conceived drama.

Martin Scorsese is undoubtedly one of cinema's all time greats, and I always look forward to every new movie he has to offer. Shutter Island will mark Scorsese's fourth time working with DiCaprio, and clearly the pairing is continuing to work fantastically. On top of that, what also has me excited to see this film is that it's been adapted from a novel by Dennis Lehane, who's other novels, Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone, have both been turned into fantastic movies by directors Clint Eastwood and Ben Affleck, respectively. Here's hoping Scorsese can follow suit with Shutter Island.

Shutter Island stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow, Emily Mortimer and Jackie Earle Haley. As mentioned, it is directed by Martin Scorsese.

What do you think of the first trailer for Shutter Island? Do Scorsese and DiCaprio have another winner on their hands?

Shutter Island is scheduled to be released on October 2, 2009 in the US, and on October 9, 2009 in the UK.
