The first look at the full cast of American Crime Story: Versace has arrived. The second season of Ryan Murphy's anthology series will focus on the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace in 1997, on the steps of his Malibu home. Filming is well underway for the season, which was originally set to air after American Crime Story: Katrina. However, Katrina has been hit by a series of delays, widely thought to be centered on the script, and so the two have switched places.
Of the two, Versace is easily the one nearest to completion, as the latest pictures from EW show. Introducing the main cast, the pictures feature Edgar Ramirez as Versace, with Ricky Martin as his long-term lover, Antonio D’Amico. Penelope Cruz plays Donatella Versace, while Darren Criss stars as killer Andrew Cunanan. One image also shows Criss with Annaleigh Ashford as Elizabeth, and Nico Evers-Swindell as Phil.
The Assassination of Gianni Versace will be based on the book, “Vulgar Favors” by Maureen Orth, which focuses on Cunanan and his life. A violent psychopath, Cunanan's lifestyle was promiscuous and drug-fueled, and he became notorious for picking up rich men in bars by making claims about a lifestyle he never lived. He claimed Versace as his fifth and final murder victim. After a botched police chase, he was finally captured eight days later, but Cunanan shot himself as the cops moved in. As with American Crime Story's first season, which focused on the infamous trial of O.J. Simpson, Murphy has chosen a high-profile case for his second season. However, while everyone knows about Versace's murder, not much is known about Cunanan, and indeed, his motives for any of his murders are still unclear. It is rumored, though, that he wanted to become a gay icon, and was jealous of Versace's popularity.
American Crime Story: Versace, has been filming on location in Malibu, Florida, shooting various scenes including the pivotal moment when Cunanan approaches Versace and shoots him dead. It's a chilling moment to see unfold even from a distance, and with multiple cameras and people present, so to watch it all unfold will be quite a gripping moment of drama. How the Versace family, in particular Donatella, and the grieving Antonio, cope with the loss is also another avenue to be explored.
Meanwhile, the now third season, Katrina, should air in the latter half of 2018, meaning two doses of American Crime Story next year. The fourth season of the show is said to focus on the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky scandal, though no release date, cast, or filming schedule is confirmed yet.
